TSL Content Survey Results: Subscriber Questions
by Will Stewart, TechSideline.com, 5/16/05

This is the second half of our content survey results, covering the subscriber content-related questions. For the answer to free content questions, see our related News and Notes update.

Recruiting coverage is king, trumping even the message boards. The top three answers show that a nice spread of recruiting coverage, non-recruiting coverage, and message boards will give every subscriber at least one thing to look forward to.

Audio features include Tech Talk Tuesday, TSL Audio, TSL Recruiting Report with Mike Harris … not so popular. That means we either need to start doing a better job, or doing it less.

There's always a lot of talk amongst those of us in the company that we need to move towards doing more audio and video. But do we?

Whew, TSL's Will Stewart narrowly fights off a challenge from Raleigh Hokie and his excellent "Keys to the Game." Many thanks, I'm flattered. And my mandate is clear: I need to write more. As TSL has grown and grown, finding time to do the sort of in-depth analysis that I like has become increasingly difficult. Nonetheless, it must be done, in order to give you what you want.

As for Raleigh Hokie, I don't anticipate that he'll be doing his "Keys to the Game" articles this fall. Raleigh was able to be productive last season for two reasons: (1) He knows a lot about football; (2) He was unemployed, or more accurately, taking a sabbatical. Raleigh has since gotten a job, heading up a department of, oh, 150-200 people. And as if that's not enough, it involves international travel, as well. So RH is going to be a little busy.

That's too bad, and we'll try to fill the void as best we can. Perhaps we'll have him do one or two articles throughout the season, instead of weekly articles. We'll also search elsewhere for similar resources.

Down at the bottom: Again, audio features … not that popular.

Wow, what an endorsement for the job Chris Horne is doing! 96.7% of you think Chris is doing a pretty-good-to-excellent job? Again, wow. And here I've been telling him he needs to shape up!

There's no substitute for good, old-fashioned working the phones and talking to the kids, finding out what they're saying. The second most popular feature, recruiting war rooms, do a lot to bring everything into perspective to those who perhaps don't follow recruiting that closely (and to those who do).

16. TSL Pass subscribers: What's your least favorite
recruiting feature/content?

Audio Interviews

This data is kind of redundant, since it's pretty much the answers to question #16 flipped over … and since it repeats the feedback with regards to audio content.

Again, this is a way to re-examine the same data from the previous two questions. Updates and war rooms score high, as you would expect. One thing we haven't done a good job of in recent years is profiles of signed recruits, so we'll try to get back to doing more of those in the future. From a personal standpoint, I grew jaded about recruiting profiles when I wrote up profiles (among others) for Montavis Pitts and Mike Brown. Pitts never came to Tech, and Brown bailed out of the program without ever having played a down. I spent a lot of time on those profiles, only to have the kids never play for VT. (Waaaahhh!)

Question 18 was an essay question and is not included here.

Well, those responses are all over the map. The only thing I can really take away from those answers is that for roughly one-quarter of you, the discount doesn't matter (which I guess means you've never shopped at TechLocker.com and/or don’t intend to).

Question 20 was an essay question and is not included here.

Lastly, just for giggles, here's a response that one of our essay questions generated. Our programmer/system admin told me later that this person logged on to the football message board, went straight to the survey from a post there, answered none of the questions, and blasted away in one of the essay boxes with the following:

Blah, blah, blah. Can you make the survey wordier???? Here it is -- I have considered subscribing about once a month for the last three years, but so much of the free content, like the recent and ridiculously bad article on the depth chart, wherein the author regaled us on all the positions with a dash mark through them and offered no real original judgment whatsoever, are so damned devoid of any real insight, that it's hard to feel like I wouldn't just be chucking 35 or 40 bucks completely away. Why does this sight publish top 30 recruits in Virginia about twice a year??? Laziness? How about a little extra effort for my money. Unless and until this seems like more than just an internet scam, my relatively fat wallet stays tightly closed. There are a lot of bad college sports sites out there, and you're no better. All this from a guy who drove from Virginia Beach to the Spring Game. Want more money, produce a better product.

Our company president had an interesting response to that diatribe: "Email this guy and set him up with a free three-month subscription. Then, after three months, ask him what he thinks."

Good suggestion, but alas, the survey form didn't ask for an email address or any personal information, so I don’t know who this person was. Ah, well – something gives me the sneaky suspicion that he would have been disappointed, anyway.

Thanks for the responses, everyone, and we will use all of this data and your comments to improve the web site. Once we finish poring through the essay questions, I'll try to share some of them with you, because I'm sure they'll bring forth more comments from me.

Thanks again, everyone!
