Tech Defense Performs Well Despite Losses

Virginia Tech had
the best performance you could hope for on Thursday night against a
powerful Georgia Tech rushing attack. The Yellow Jackets entered the game
#2 in the country in rushing, and the Hokies went to Atlanta with a young,
patchwork and banged up defense. Things didn't look promising on paper,
but Bud Foster's defense turned in a very impressive performance.

Only Miami held Georgia
Tech to fewer rushing yards than the Virginia Tech defense did, and only
the Hurricanes and the Maryland Terrapins limited the Yellow Jackets to
fewer yards per carry. 243 rushing yards and five yards per carry might
look like a lot on paper, but for Georgia Tech, its well below average.
Consider who Bud
Foster had available to put on the field, and where he had to put them,
and it's an even more remarkable accomplishment.
- A 6-0, 187-lbs
cornerback (Kyle Fuller) playing whip linebacker
- A 6-2, 240-lbs
defensive end (J.R. Collins) playing defensive tackle
- A 6-1, 219-lbs
defensive end (Tyrel Wilson) in the starting lineup
- Missing from the
lineup: Antoine Hopkins, Jeron Gouveia-Winslow, Alonzo Tweedy
- A mike linebacker
who had played just four snaps all season
- A front seven that
featured all sophomores with an average weight of just 237.7-lbs.
- A defense that
featured just one starter (Kyle Fuller) who started against Georgia Tech
at the same position in 2010
When you consider
all of those facts, it just didn't seem likely that the VT defense would
be able to put the clamps on the Georgia Tech offense, but they did. The
Yellow Jackets broke their share of big plays, as they always do. But the
VT defense took away the A-back option pitches, and Embry Peeples, Roddy
Jones and Orwin Smith combined for just 10 touches all game. That was a
big part of why the Hokies were successful on Thursday night.
Imagine if the
Hokies had Antoine Hopkins to go along with his brother Derrick on the
inside. That would have allowed J.R. Collins to play defensive end, and
the defense probably would have fared even better against the Yellow
Jackets.
Tech's defense will
go back to normal next week against the traditional pro style offense of
the North Carolina Tar Heels. While Thursday night's performance won't be
looked back on as one of the best VT defensive performances ever, because
of what the defense was missing heading into the game, it should be fondly
remember by Tech fans.

Hokies
Play Great on Big Stage
November 11, 2011
Last
night's game was just about as big as it gets in the ACC. In another
such game earlier in the season, the Hokies came up short, but they
did just about everything right in last night's victory in Atlanta.
As a result, the Coastal Division is theirs to lose, and it looks
like they are going to get another shot at the Clemson Tigers.

Around
the ACC: November 11, 2011
November 11, 2011
Thursday
night's huge battle in Atlanta propelled Virginia Tech one step
closer to the ACC Championship Game in Charlotte. Georgia Tech has
been eliminated from the Coastal Division race, and it will be
either the Hokies or the Virginia Cavaliers who will take on an
Atlantic Division team for the ACC crown. If Clemson beats Wake
Forest this weekend, the Atlantic team will be set.

the Coastal Division. Georgia Tech dropped to 7-3 overall, and 4-3

Five
Questions For Rev. Zeke
November 10, 2011
On
Wednesday, the first day of Division 1 Men's Basketball's Early
Signing Period, Virginia Tech announced the signing of Hargrave
Military Academy forward Montrezl Harrell and Rustburg (VA)
forward Marshall Wood. TSL basketball recruiting expert Rev. Zeke
Vodka took some time to answer five questions, discussing the
talents of these two prospects, what fans can expect out of them
next season, and whether or not Virginia Tech is completely finished
in the 2012 class.

Pre-Game
Takes: Georgia Tech
November 10, 2011
Think
back six months ago. It was early May, and nothing was going on in
Hokie football. Spring practice was over, and although there was a
little action going on in recruiting, what you really longed for was
the midseason, being in the thick of the race, and playing games
that mattered.

Questions
Stack Up as Season Approaches
November 10, 2011
Virginia
Tech begins the 2011-12 basketball season on Saturday when East
Tennessee State visits Blacksburg. The Hokies lost two of the most
productive players in school history, plus the reliable Terrell
Bell. To complicate matters, they've suffered through their usual
rash of injuries in the preseason, though fortunately it hasn't been
as bad as it was last year. However, because of all the new faces,
this was the year Seth Greenberg needed a healthy preseason so he
could get a good look at his team. Instead, he'll go into Saturday
with a lot of unknowns.

In On Nigel Williams
November 10, 2011
Nigel
Williams' high school football career came to an end last
weekend. Obviously, the Benedictine (Richmond, VA) star would prefer
to be preparing for the VIS Division 1 semifinals, but he is pleased
with what he accomplished in his four years and looks forward to
what awaits him in Blacksburg.

Taraschke
Likely To Gray-Shirt
November 8, 2011
Riverbend
(Fredericksburg, VA) offensive lineman Adam Taraschke will
sign a letter of intent with Virginia Tech in February of 2012. The
timing of his enrollment is less clear, though the 6'6",
270-pound prospect feels he'll likely enroll in Blacksburg in
January of 2013.

Football Game Preview: Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech
November 8, 2011
Virginia
Tech's options for Thursday night's game against Georgia Tech are
simple. Win, and the Hokies will still have a chance to win the
Coastal Division and get their rematch with Clemson for the ACC
Championship. Lose, and they are likely out of contention, and
they'll have to content themselves with the Chick-fil-A Bowl or
perhaps something lower on the totem pole.

Checking
In On Davion Tookes
November 7, 2011
Last
season was Davion Tookes' first as a full-time cornerback.
The Creekside (Fairburn, GA) star overcame lack of experience, as
well as playing with a soft cast on one of his wrists, to turn in a
productive 2010 season, recording 42 tackles, six pass break-ups and
three interceptions. As a senior, Tookes continued to be a player
head coach Johnny White could rely on to make plays.
