Record
Breaking Year for the Hokies?
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com,

Virginia Tech has
several players on the current team who will be shooting for career
records before it's all said and done. Several will have a chance to set
records this year, while others will probably have to wait until 2011.
Despite Tech's
reputation as being a defensive school, all of these records are for the
offense or special teams.

Ryan Williams and
Darren Evans
Williams had an
outstanding season as a r-freshman, running for a Tech record 1,655 yards
and an NCAA freshman record 21 touchdowns. If he stays at Virginia Tech
long enough, he'll have a chance to break just about every record in the
book.
As it stands now, he
is almost a lock to break the 100-yard rushing game record. Cyrus Lawrence
had 16 100-yard games in his four year career, while Kevin Jones had 15 in
three years. With 10 100-yard games in just one season, Williams will
probably break Lawrence's record as a sophomore.
If he stays through
his junior season, Williams will have a chance to break Tech's scoring
record, as well as the rushing record. He needs 2,111 yards tie the
rushing mark, and even if Darren Evans wasn't returning, a 2,000 yard
season would be very unlikely. Even a 1,200 yard season will put him in
the top five on Tech's list.
Darren Evans had
four 100-yard rushing games in 2008, and he's 12 behind Cyrus Lawrence's
record. Of course, that Lawrence record will probably be broken by Ryan
Williams before Evans has a chance to go for it.
Tyrod Taylor
Tyrod Taylor has had
an accomplished career at Virginia Tech, starting games since his true
freshman season. He'll have a chance to break several of Bryan Randall's
records during his senior season.
With 327 plays in
2010, Taylor will tie Randall's record of 1,242 plays. A "play"
is either a run or a pass, so every time Taylor throws or runs the ball he
will inch closer to Randall's record. He had 349 plays last season, so
things will be close.
Taylor is also 2,234
yards away from breaking Randall's career passing record of 6,508 yards,
and 2,223 yards from his total yardage record of 8,034. Both records are
very much within Taylor's reach. He had 2,311 passing yards last year, and
2,681 total yards. If he stays healthy all season, he'll have a great
chance to set both records.
By the way, that
mark of 2,311 yards was the second best of the Beamer Bowl Era. The only
Tech quarterback since Don Strock to throw for more yards in a single
season was Marcus Vick with 2,393 yards in 2005.
The Wide Receivers
Virginia Tech's
talented trio of junior wide receivers have a chance to break some records
of their own. Dyrell Roberts is Tech's #3 wideout and kick return
specialist. He has 1,119 kickoff return yards in just two seasons, which trails
all-time leader Jon Jeffries by just 328 yards. There's a very good chance
that Roberts will break that record during his junior season.
Roberts also
averages 28 yards per kickoff return, which is ahead of Mike Imoh's career
mark of 25.4 yards per return. Roberts will have a great shot to break
Imoh's average record.
Jarrett Boykin and
Danny Coale are going after Ernest Wilford's career receptions record.
Boykin has 70 catches through just two years, an impressive number for
Tech wide receivers. He needs just 56 receptions to catch Wilford's mark
of 126.
Danny Coale is
currently sitting at 66 career receptions, just 60 behind Wilford's
record. It's unlikely that either Boykin or Coale will threaten the record in 2010,
but it will be something to watch for in 2011.

Football Preview: Offensive Line and Tight Ends
August 13, 2010
We've
previewed quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers so far this
preseason. However, they'd never get very far without a good group
of offensive linemen in front of them. This offensive line, though
it has some youth, inspires more confidence than any Tech offensive
line in recent memory.

Dissecting
the Decision to Practice LT at TE
August 12, 2010
After
Wednesday's practice, offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring told
BeamerBall.com that heir-apparent QB Logan Thomas is going to get
some reps at tight end, in the interest of getting Virginia Tech's
best athletes on the field. His primary focus still remains as a
quarterback, but the work at tight end tells you something about how
the Hokie coaches view this upcoming season.

Preseason
Report: TE Christian Reeves
August 12, 2010
Eagles
Landing Christian Academy (McDonough, GA) head coach Jonathan Gess
gave Christian Reeves a chance to play offense last season,
starting the 6-3, 220-pound standout at wide receiver. The move paid
off with Reeves hauling in 26 receptions for 584 yards and four
scores. If this past offseason is any indication, however, last
season may have only been a glimpse into the potential the Virginia
Tech-bound rising senior has on the offensive side of the ball.

Football Preview: Wide Receivers
August 10, 2010
Just
two years ago, the wide receiver position was the biggest weakness
on the team. The Hokies played all freshmen at receiver in 2008, and
as a result it was perhaps the weakest position on any team of the
Beamer Bowl Era. Two years later, things are a lot different.

Call
Me a Sucker
August 9, 2010
I've
been watching Virginia Tech football closely for 27 years now, ever
since I enrolled at Tech as a freshman in the fall of 1983. I've
seen highly hyped teams fade into mediocrity (1994 and 2003,
anyone?), and I've seen teams from which nothing was expected
surprise us all (1993 and 2004, for example). As the years go by, I
get caught up less and less in the preseason hype, but call me a
sucker, because I've been roped in by the 2010 Hokies. This could be
a really good year.
