Greenberg's Contract
Extension is Well Deserved
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com,
TSLMail #425, March 26, 2010
Virginia Tech head basketball coach
Seth Greenberg has been rumored to be a candidate for the St. John's head
coaching job for the last two weeks. Greenberg is in New York right now doing
color commentary for CBS College Sports Network, so if he were going to inteview
for the St. John's job, now would be the perfect time.
However,
it doesn't appear that's going to happen at this point. Virginia Tech announced
on Friday afternoon that Greenberg has agreed to a new contract extension. The
contract has been renegotiated for its remaining four years, and a two year
extension has been added. The numbers will be released in the next two weeks
when all the details have been finalized and signed, but a verbal agreement is
in place.
That's good news for Virginia Tech
basketball and fans of the program. Greenberg is a New York native and his
mother lives in New York. St. John's has always been a program that many Tech
fans were worried about. Those worries are now off the table.
Greenberg has taken a program that
had just one winning season between 1996-97 and 2002-3 and guided them to six
winning seasons in seven years. The Hokies have gone to the NIT four times under
Greenberg, and the NCAA Tournament once.
The Hokies have been on the bubble
for the NCAA Tournament twice in the past three years, but have been one of the
first teams out on each occassion. Despite the NCAA Tournament rejections, Tech
has still fared well in postseason play under Greenberg. In their four NITs and
one NCAA Tournament, the Hokies have never been eliminated in the first round.
In seven years at Tech, Seth
Greenberg has compiled a record of 132 wins and 94 losses. That's a winning
percentage of 58.4%.
After meandering around the .500
mark in Greenberg's first three years, the program began to hit its stride in
the fourth year of the Greenberg era. For the first time, the roster was filled
with ACC level recruits, and that continues to be the case. Since the 2006-07
season, the Hokies have 87 wins and 50 losses, and that's a winning percentage
of 63.5%.
Greenberg's 132 wins rank second in
Virginia Tech basketball history. That surpasses even Bill Foster, an oustanding
coach who had success at several major programs. Foster won 101 games between
1991-92 and 1996-97. He is one of Seth Greenberg's coaching mentors.
The Hokies will have a chance to go
to the postseason for the fifth consective time in school history next season.
That's only happened once before. Tech went to three NITs and two NCAA
Tournaments from 1982 through 1986. If the Hokies reach the Big Dance next
season, they'll match that feat.
Most of that is thanks to
Greenberg, who has taken a program that couldn't even reach the Big East
Tournament before his arrival and made it respectable. Tech fans can now breathe
easy, because it appears that he'll be the head coach in Blacksburg for the
forseeable future.

Spring Practice Preview: Defensive Line
March 26, 2010
For
the third year in a row, Virginia Tech enters spring practice with
depth questions along the defensive line. With the early departure
of Jason Worilds to the NFL, the Hokies are left with just two
experienced players at defensive end. Two of the top three defensive
tackles are also gone, and Charley Wiles will need some guys to step
up this spring and earn playing time.

Garland
Finishes Career With Over 2,000 Points
March 25, 2010
Ty
Garland played most of his varsity high school basketball career
at point guard, the position he held as a freshman and sophomore and
for part of his junior season. The 6-1, 165-pound senior, a Virginia
Tech recruit, was a full-time 2 this season and played well,
averaging about 25 points per game while leading Bartram to a 19-10
overall record and a Public AAAA league title. Garland produced no
matter where he lined up in head coach James Brown's backcourt,
finishing his high school career with 2,198 points.

Spring Practice Preview: Offensive Line
March 25, 2010
At
this time every year, we are generally worried about the progress of
the offensive line and lamenting the lack of depth up front. While
the Hokies have lost Sergio Render and Ed Wang, the overall talent
and depth on the line has not been better since Tech joined the ACC.

Stop Just Short of New York
March 25, 2010
With
14:26 remaining in the game last night, J.T. Thompson stole the ball
at midcourt. He slashed in front of a pass, knocked it towards the
Hokie basket, and ran after it. Virginia Tech was leading 60-48 and
was torching the nets, and as Thompson pursued the loose ball, a
trip to New York was all but a done deal.

Spring Practice Preview: Wide Receivers and Tight Ends
March 24, 2010
Tyrod
Taylor should have plenty of talented and experienced options at
wide receiver this year. However, the depth is thin at tight end,
and the spring will be all about Bryan Stinespring figuring out if
he has more than one or two players who are ready to play. A lack of
tight ends could limit Tech's formation options, which could lead to
more playing time for wide receivers.

Getting A Look From VT
March 24, 2010
South
Columbus (Tabor City, NC) had one player - tight end/defensive end
Ethan Farmer (UNC) - sign with a FBS program in last year's class.
It boasts another FBS recruit in the 2011 class in 6-0, 190-pound
athlete Brian Riggins. A terrific athlete, Riggins, who can
post a vertical leap of 39-inches and ran the 40 in under 4.5
seconds at a Nike Camp, boasts two official offers.

Spring Practice Preview: Running Backs
March 23, 2010
Virginia
Tech will have plenty of options at tailback this year. They return
two of the nation's best running backs, and there is talent behind
them as well. Starting fullback Kenny Jefferson will have to be
replaced, but overall Billy Hite is one of the happiest coaches on
the staff heading into the spring.

Accounting
for 2,761 of your team's total offensive yards will certainly gain
attention. That's exactly what 5-11, 175-pound junior Darius
Jennings did at Gilman last season, guiding the Baltimore high

College coaches from all across the country have taken notice of
Jennings, who recently received official scholarship offer number

Spring Practice Preview: Quarterbacks
March 22, 2010
Quarterback
is the most important position on the football field, and the Hokies
will have the luxury of having a senior who has been at least a
part-time starter since his freshman season. The biggest questions
at quarterback are who will win the backup position, and if Logan
Thomas wins it, will it be as early as this spring?

Who
Wants it More?
March 22, 2010
It's
the morning of Virginia Tech's matchup with Connecticut, a legendary
program with a legendary coach. Of the 347 teams currently playing
Division 1 basketball, Connecticut is one of just 14 to win multiple
NCAA championships (two, in 1999 and 2004), and coach Jim Calhoun is
the seventh-winningest coach all-time in NCAA men's basketball. The
buzz around Virginia Tech's matchup with UConn is ... well, not very
buzzy.
