Tech Nearing Record Number of Wins by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com, TSLMail #420 February 19, 2010 With one more win this season, the Virginia Tech basketball team will have its 22nd victory of the year. Only eight Hokie teams in the past have ever reached that mark, so we're walking down the path less traveled during the 2009-10 season. With one more win, this team will tie for the fourth-most wins in school history. Two more wins, and they'll be tied for the second-most wins in school history. With four more wins, they will tie the 1994-95 team for most overall wins in school history. Here's a quick look at those Tech teams who have won 22 games or more in a single season.
Virginia Tech has played just 25 games this year. At a minimum, they'll play seven more: the five remaining regular season games, at least one ACC tournament game and at least one game in a postseason tournament. They could end up playing a lot more than seven. With so many games remaining on the schedule, could this team break the record set by the 1994-95 team? They are certainly on pace to do so. That 1994-95 team won 25 total games, but had just 20 wins at the end of the regular season. After they lost to Southern Miss in the first round of the Metro Conference Tournament, they fell from an NCAA tournament team to an NIT team. They went on to win five games in a row and win the NIT, but this current Virginia Tech team already has more wins than the 1994-95 group had at the end of their conference tournament. The 1982-83 team won 23 games, including one win in the NIT and one win in the Metro Tournament. They recorded their 21st win in the last game of the regular season, a 73-72 victory at Cincinnati. Though that team is tied for second-most wins all-time at Virginia Tech, they did not reach the NCAA tournament. The 1995-96 team is the only team with more than 22 wins at Virginia Tech to get a berth in the NCAA tournament. That team, led by Ace Custis, went 23-6 before losing to Kentucky in the second round of the Big Dance. They won their 21st game in their final home game of the year, beating Xavier 70-61. Five other teams have reached the 22-win mark, including the 1972-73 NIT championship team, and most recently the 2006-07 NCAA tournament team. The 1972-73 team didn't reach 21 wins until the NIT semifinals, and the 2006-07 team picked up their 21st victory in the ACC tournament. The 1978-79 team won the Metro Conference Tournament, but they didn't get their 21st win until the tournament finals against Florida State. The 1983-84 team picked up their 21st win in the NIT, while the 1985-86 team beat Florida State in the final road game of the regular season to get #21. The current Tech team already has 21 wins, and they've reached that number a lot faster than other Tech teams in the past. With five regular season games remaining, the ACC tournament, and either the NCAA tournament or NIT, this team has an excellent shot to break the school record for wins in a season.
