Hokies One of the Most Experienced ACC Teams
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com, TSLMail #394, August 14, 2009

Virginia Tech came into last season as one of the least experienced teams in the ACC. The Hokies were replacing most of the 2007 defense, and they were also breaking in new wide receivers and new tailbacks. They overcame that to win their second consecutive ACC Championship, and now they have an experienced team returning in 2008.

Let's compare Tech's returning starting experience with the rest of the ACC.

The Hokies are tied with Clemson for second place in the ACC in total starting experience, and they are narrowly behind Miami. Tech returns 22.5 years of starting experience between their offense and defense.

Most of the ACC is jumbled between 16.5 years and 19.5 years, but the Maryland Terrapins have just 9.5 years of starting experience returning. They are easily the least experienced team in the conference this year, and it looks to be a struggle on both sides of the ball for Ralph Friedgen's team.

Let's break things down further and look at the offense and the defense. First, the offense.

Wake Forest struggled on offense a year ago, but they return senior quarterback Riley Skinner, who has started since his freshman season. They also bring back their offensive line intact. The Demon Deacons are inexperienced at wide receiver, but their offense should be much more effective as a whole this year.

Virginia Tech has 13 years of starting experience on offense. Sergio Render has started since his freshman season, and Greg Boone is entering his third season as a starter. Tech's wide receivers have a year of experience, and the offensive line is seasoned. The tailbacks are not experienced, but they are perhaps the most talented unit on the team.

Miami, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Boston College and Florida State all return at least 10 years of starting experience on the offensive side of the ball.

Now, let's compare that to the defenses in the ACC.

Only three teams in the conference return more than 9.5 years of starting experience on defense. UNC, Miami and Clemson have very experienced defensive units, and they are expected to be near the top of the standings in the ACC this year.

The Hokies return 9.5 years of starting experience on defense, which is tied for fourth in the conference. They lost four full-time starters from the 2008 team, including Macho Harris, who was a three-year starter in Blacksburg.

Overall, offenses in the ACC will be more experienced than defenses this year. ACC offenses have struggled over the past several seasons, but the talent at quarterback is going up, and teams are returning talented offensive players. It looks like it's time for offensive production in the conference to go back up.
