ACC Quarterbacks Should be Better in 2009
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com

The ACC has been regarded as arguably the weakest BCS football conference over the last few seasons. Things should begin to change in 2009. Success in football starts at the quarterback position, and for the first time in quite awhile, the ACC returns nine starters at quarterback for the 2009 season.

Sub par quarterback play has hurt the conference over the last several years. However, some good young talent is beginning to emerge, and the ACC looks like it could improve this year.

ACC Quarterbacks
School Player Returner?
Boston College Dominique Davis No
Clemson Willy Korn No
Duke Thad Lewis Yes
Florida State Christian Ponder Yes
Georgia Tech Josh Nesbitt Yes
Maryland Chris Turner Yes
Miami Jacory Harris Yes
NC State Russell Wilson Yes
UNC T.J. Yates Yes
Virginia Vic Hall No
Virginia Tech Tyrod Taylor Yes
Wake Forest Riley Skinner Yes

Nine of the 12 ACC teams have a returning starter at quarterback. Though Dominique Davis (BC), Willy Korn (Clemson) and Vic Hall (UVA) aren't considered returning starters, they have been spot starters in the past. While Hall only has one game under his belt at quarterback, at Virginia Tech last season, the Hoos return two other signal callers with starting experience: Jameel Sewell and Marc Verica.

These guys not only have experience, but they have talent as well. Russell Wilson was first team All-ACC last year as a r-freshman. Jacory Harris had a very impressive true freshman season for Miami. Riley Skinner is an experienced senior with an underrated arm who just finds ways to win. Josh Nesbitt is the perfect fit in Georgia Tech's triple option offense, while T.J. Yates has put up big numbers in the past for UNC.

Clemson quarterback Willy Korn is a former 5-star recruit who will finally take over the signal caller duties full-time. Tyrod Taylor is perhaps the ACC's most talented starting quarterback, and he'll have a number of weapons surrounding him this season at Virginia Tech.

Since the Hokies joined the ACC for the 2004 season, they have had two first team All-ACC quarterbacks in Bryan Randall and Marcus Vick. Sean Glennon was one of the better quarterbacks in the league as well, and Tyrod Taylor certainly has the talent. While Tech's offense hasn't always been as productive as everyone would like, the Hokies do generally get better quarterback play than their opponents.

On paper, the ACC will have a number of good quarterbacks in 2009. Which team ends up winning the conference could depend on which quarterback plays the best.

TSL Spring Game Tailgate Information

OK, Hokie Sports Fans...time once again for the VT Spring Game. The team has been busy throughout the winter in the weight room, has endured the dreaded 6 AM workouts, and is busy sharpening their skills in Spring practice. It is just about time for the annual Maroon and White Spring Game. The least we can do, as fans, is come out and cheer them on, and what better way to get in a cheering mood than to do a little tailgating!

The 2009 Edition of the Award Winning TSL Spring Game Tailgate Party. Your hosts this year will be Pops & Co., knucklejunction, hokiebred, HFNVA and F4EHokie. Russian Hokie will be our official photographer.

Here's what will be provided:

  • BBQ Pork!
  • Plates, napkins, cups, and utensils
  • Buns and condiments
  • Ice
  • Grills

Here's what you need to bring:

  • Your favorite beverage, adult or otherwise
  • Hamburger, sausages, hot dogs, or anything else you want to grill
  • Chips, salsa, veggie trays, chicken, side dishes, etc.
  • Cookies, cake, or other baked goods for desert.
  • Whatever else you want to eat (But plan on sharing!)

We will be cooking about 125# of pork, and it will be first come, first served.

Tailgating begins at 10:00 AM. Look for the white tents and the Hokie flag in the east end of lot 2.

This year, since we don't have a sponsor as in the past, we need folks to step up and help us out with the costs. There will be a donation jar at the tailgate. Please chip in and help us pay our expenses!

We're looking forward to it, and hope you are as well!!!
