Virginia Tech's All-Greenberg Era Team by Will Stewart, TechSideline.com Seth Greenberg is in his sixth season at Virginia Tech, and he has produced a number of quality players. The ACC media recently released their All-ACC team. Today we'll give you an All-Greenberg team from the pool of players that he's coached at Virginia Tech. Some tough decisions had to made, but here is the starting lineup.
First, let's talk about the guys who didn't make the list. Jamon Gordon is my all-time favorite Tech basketball player and a terrific defender. He was also a solid scorer, an good leader, and the perfect type of Seth Greenberg combo guard. He's a tough guy to leave off the list. However, with Dowdell making the team, and Deron Washington able to defend so many positions, I decided that I didn't need another defender in my backcourt. I also left off A.D. Vassallo, which was very difficult. Vassallo has a chance to finish in the top five in school history in scoring. However, I already have three excellent scoring options in my starting lineup with Dowdell, Delaney and Matthews. I chose Deron Washingon over Vassallo for defensive matchup purposes and game changing play. Zabian Dowdell would be one member of my starting backcourt. Dowdell finished sixth in school history in scoring with 1,785 points. He was named First Team All-ACC in 2007 after averaging 17.4 points per game. Dowdell had a career night when he scored 33 points in a win over North Carolina in the Dean Dome. He was also an excellent defender, and the backcourt he shared with Jamon Gordon was one of the best in the nation. Malcolm Delaney makes it as my other guard. I like to have two ball handlers on the court as much as possible. Though Delaney is only a sophomore, he already has 900 career points. He is on pace to easily finish in the top 5 in scoring in school history. Though he's been in a slump recently, Delaney can shoot, he can get to the line, he's the team leader, and a very good overall basketball player. Deron Washington 13.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game as a senior, but he made a much greater impact on the program that the stats indicate. He was the most athletic player in the ACC, and his athletic ability helped him make plays that no one else could make. He was also the most versatile defender in the ACC. Washington had the ability guard anyone from a point guard to a power forward. Bryant Matthews was a First Team All-Big East performer in 2003-04, Seth Greenberg's first season in Blacksburg. Matthews was a 6-7, 215-lbs forward who played on the inside for the undersized Hokies. Despite his lack of size in a conference that features a lot of big inside players, Matthews led the league in scoring at 22.1 points per game. He also averaged 8.9 rebounds per game while shooting 47.3% from the field and 36% from three-point range. At one point, Seth Greenberg called Bryant Matthews "the greatest competitor I've ever coached." That says quite a bit, coming from a coach who puts so much stock into playing hard and showing toughness. Coleman Collins is the final member of my All-Greenberg team. He is the only true inside player on the team. Try to forget about his senior year for a moment, and remember his 17 rebound performance as a sophomore against Sheldon Williams of Duke. Then think about the 25-point performance he had in Cameron Indoor Stadium against Williams as a junior. Collins was a very good player, when he was healthy. He was not the same player as a senior in 2006-07, but at his peak he was the best true inside player Seth Greenberg has had since coming to Tech. That's my starting lineup from the Seth Greenberg era. I think those guys would win a lot of games together.
