Tech Sports News | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Virginia Tech and East Carolina will meet for the 14th time on Saturday in Charlotte, NC. The series began in 1956, though the teams did not play again until 1987. Tech is in the middle of a big series with the Pirates, but it's not the first time the two schools have played each other multiple years in a row. The Hokies played ECU every year from 1987-1994, with mixed results. To get a clear picture of the history between Tech and ECU, we have to divide the series into two parts. First, the era when the Hokies were an independent program, and then the era when the Hokies were in the Big East/ACC. Here is how the Hokies fared against ECU before they joined a major conference.
The results also showed that the teams were evenly matched. Throwing out the 1956 result, Tech went just 2-4 against the Pirates from 1987-1992. The Hokies were on probation from the Bill Dooley era, and they had not yet tapped into the recruiting potential that the Big East gave them. In 1993, Frank Beamer had a complete team for the first time, in terms of scholarships, and the Big East had enabled Tech to recruit talented players like Cornell Brown. Since 1993, the series has been one-sided.
Tech is 6-0 against the Pirates since the Hokies got a full complement of scholarship players and began reaping the recruiting benefits of being in a major conference. Before that, the programs were pretty much on the exact same level. In 1991, East Carolina went 11-1, including a Peach Bowl win over NC State. Their only loss came to Illinois by seven points. You could say that they had a better program than the Hokies at that time. Then Tech got in the Big East, while ECU was stuck outside a major conference. As a result, ECU stayed the same, and Tech skyrocketed. The last time the Pirates felt really good about their chances of beating Virginia Tech was in 2000. Like this year's matchup, Tech had lost a lot of great players from the previous year's team. Most of the defense was new, though the offense was stacked that year with Michael Vick, Andre Davis and Lee Suggs. Some TV analysts were picking the Pirates to win. Instead, Tech jumped out to a 31-0 halftime lead and cruised to the 45-28 victory. That's not likely to happen this year. The Hokies don't have Vick, Suggs or Davis. Of course, the Pirates don't have quarterback David Garrard either. Virginia Tech has had their fair share of success in the state of North Carolina since joining the ACC. In fact, the Hokies have not lost a game in the Tar Heel state since before the Beamer Bowl Era began. Here is a look at Tech's most recent games in the state of North Carolina.
The Hokies rarely played in North Carolina before joining the ACC. Since joining the conference, they have dominated when they've traveled to that state. Virginia Tech's last loss in the state of North Carolina was back in 1992. The Hokies lost to East Carolina 30-27 in Greenville that year. Can the Pirates be the first team to beat Tech in North Carolina since they did it back in 1992? We'll find out tomorrow.
