Top 25 In-State OL Recruits of the Past

by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com

Will Stewart’s “Road To Signing Day” article that was released Thursday on TSL revealed a lot about the current offensive line recruits in the state of Virginia. So how do those recruits compare to classes of the past? And how did Tech’s past offensive line signees from Virginia’s top 25 fare in their careers? Read on to find out.

First, let’s take a look at all the offensive linemen who have been ranked in the top 25 since 1995, and where they went to school.

Let’s examine the 13 players on that list who signed with Virginia Tech. Three of those players, David Pugh, Jake Grove and Jon Dunn, went on to the NFL, and Pugh ended up at defensive tackle for the Hokies. From 1995 through 1997, the Hokies signed just one offensive lineman from the top 25, and that was Pugh.

Let’s take a further look at each of those Tech signees, and what they accomplished in their Tech careers, or what they are projected to do this season.

Tight End

Only five of those 13 players recruited since 1997 have started on the offensive line. As noted above, Pugh played defensive tackle. Travis Conway was recruited to be a long snapper. Beau Warren will likely start his career at tight end. But of the other 10 players who did play, or will play, along the offensive line, the Hokies have recruited well.

If Nick Marshman and Ryan Shuman start as projected this year, then seven of those 10 players will have achieved starter status. Matt Welsh and Antonio North would still have an opportunity to start in the future, as well. The Hokies haven’t gotten big numbers of offensive linemen in the top 25 over the years, but they have generally gotten quality play from those they did get.

Unfortunately, many of the offensive linemen that spurned the Hokies to head to UVA, or out of state, went on to very successful careers. Boston College has landed three offensive linemen from Virginia since 1995. Two of them, Damien Woody and Darnell Alford, went on to the NFL. The third, Pat Sheil, is still in school.

The Hoos have recruited 13 players off the list, and three of them -- John St. Clair (1995), Elton Brown (2001) and Brad Butler (2002) -- have gone on to the NFL. Of Tech’s 13 offensive line recruits, two have gone to the NFL. Pugh also was drafted by the Colts, but as a defensive lineman, of course.

The Hokies and Cavs have done a good job of keeping the linemen in the top 25 in state recently. Since 2000, there have been 20 top 25 linemen in the state, and 16 have gone to either Virginia Tech or UVA. Of those 16, nine have signed with VT and seven with UVA.

The Hokies have never had a chance to sign as many highly rated offensive linemen as they do this year, especially in-state. Tech has a legitimate shot at almost all of the offensive linemen in the state of Virginia this year, and if they can pull most of them in to go along with (hopefully) Tyrod Taylor and a couple of top notch receivers, this could be the best offensive recruiting class the Hokies have ever signed.

TechSideline.com Updates From the Past Week

The Road to Signing Day 2007: A Strong Year for In-State Offensive Linemen

June 22, 2006
Lost amidst all the Tyrod Taylor hype and anticipation is the strength of this year's in-state class of offensive linemen. The TechSideline.com pre-summer Top 30 rankings included an incredible five offensive linemen in the top 13 players. That's more highly-rated offensive linemen than the state has seen in more than a decade. How do the Hokies stand with this strong crop of road-graders? Who's going to commit early? Who's going to take a while? Who's got academic issues, and who doesn't? We'll take a look.

Cloy Down to Three
June 22, 2006
Spring Valley standout Mason Cloy had somewhat of a difficult time narrowing his list of schools from 13 to three, but he has finally done so. Techsideline.com caught up with the 6-4, 260-pound tight end/center prospect to find out which three made the cut, where he goes from here and if he has a leader among the three.

The Experience Factor: ACC Coastal Division
June 21, 2006
We complete our two-part look at returning starters in the ACC by examining the Coastal Division, home of the Hokies. Whereas the Atlantic averaged over 12 returning starters per team (12.5), the Coastal is returning less than half of its starters (10.8 per team), led by 13 returning starters at Georgia Tech. Here's a team-by-team rundown.

A Timetable for Alvarez?
June 20, 2006
6-5, 310-pound Hylton (Woodbridge, VA) OL William Alvarez enjoyed a successful evaluation period, adding significantly to his scholarship count. His teammate, OL Leo Grassilli, saw his recruitment pick up in intensity last month as well and could be on the brink of earning his first 1A scholarship offer. We caught up with Hylton head coach Lou Sorrentino for updates on both of his recruits.

Q&A with John Graves
June 19, 2006
Former Meadowbrook star John Graves led the Monarachs to a Division 5 State Championship in the 2004 season. As a senior in 2005, he earned VHSCA first-team all-state (at OG and DE) and first-team all-metro honors in leading the Monarchs to a Division 6 region championship game appearance. He racked up 65 tackles including 12 tackles-for-loss and nine sacks his senior season. Graves was rated the state’s #5 overall player in the state and a 4-star recruit by Techsideline.com.

The Experience Factor: ACC Atlantic Division
June 19, 2006
With preseason practice beginning in about two months, it's time to start taking a look at the 2006 football season. With the ACC leading the way with players selected in the NFL Draft, the experience level for most teams is going to be down heading into 2006. TSL will take a look at the ACC to see which teams are returning the most experienced players. Today we'll take a look at the six teams from the Atlantic Division.

Don't Sleep on These Teams
June 16, 2006
Virginia Tech's got a cake schedule for 2006, right? It's a bunch of lousy out of conference matchups and lame ACC teams. That road trip to Miami is a Herculean task, but other than that, the Hokies should mow through the other 11 matchups with ease, right? Wrong. We'll take a look at a small handful of "trap" games that you might think the Hokies will win without any problem, but in reality, they're games that Tech could easily lose. Included on the list is Georgia Tech and super junior receiver Calvin Johnson (right).
