What??? Sixty-large for a BEER MUG?? Fear not, Hokie friends, this is a serious piece of hardware that you can use to impress your friends, your neighbors, your rivals, and most of all ... yourself. Finely crafted by hand in Sheffield, England, by Old Forge Metals, this solid-bottomed tankard will, of course, hold a pint -- it is made in England, after all. TechLocker.com's tankard is beautifully embossed with the official VT logo and is made of the highest quality lead-free bright pewter. It makes a great gift. For example, if you've got Hokie friends getting married this fall, we have two things to say: 1.) Shame on them for getting married during football season! 2.) Give them two of these and watch the "WOW" factor when they open up your gift. This isn't a set of sheets that they'll sleep on, trash, and then throw away. No, this is something they'll have and use forever, and they'll think of you every time they take them out and make a toast to the Hokies. |

Tech Football Ready to Go Hear that? It's the sound of silence, as the Hokie football team and its fans gear up to finally kick the 2002 football season off, in just two days. The last fall scrimmage has been played, the depth chart has been settled, the preseason magazine and newspaper articles have all run, and now it's time to just wait. Two days. The offseason seems like a long, long time every year, but sure enough, the season always gets here. You count down the days, and it goes from 100 to 50, then to one month, then to one week, and the next thing you know, you're loading up the car and heading for Blacksburg.
Here are some last-minute nuggets and miscellaneous news items that you may have missed. Freshman Players: Coach Beamer has said that seven of Tech's true freshman are guaranteed to play Sunday, with others possible. The following true freshmen will dress and play: OL's Reggie Butler and Jimmy Martin, DT Jonathan Lewis, DE Darryl Tapp, FS Jimmy Williams, TB-turned-WR Mike Imoh, and CB Cary Wade. The freshmen who will dress and may or may not play are: QB Marcus Vick, kicker/punter Nic Schmitt, OL Danny McGrath and TB John Candelas. Long season: VT's regular season this year is 105 days long, tying them with Fresno State for the longest season this year. Fresno State opens today at Wisconsin and finishes Dec. 5 at Louisiana Tech. VT finishes Dec. 7 at Miami. Weather Update: It's currently 91 degrees (mid-Friday afternoon) in Blacksburg, but Sunday should be more temperate. Weather.com is calling for partly cloudy weather, 20% chance of rain, high of 83 degrees. Click here for the forecast. Beamer Going for No. 150: Against ASU Sunday, Coach Beamer is going for career win #150 as a college coach. Beamer went 42-23-2 at Murray State and is 107-65-2 at VT, for a combined record of 149-88-4. His victory total ranks sixth among active Division 1-A coaches, behind Joe Paterno (327), Bobby Bowden (323), Lou Holtz (233), Jackie Sherrill (175), and Ken Hatfield (155). Hatfield coaches at Rice, projected as the #104 team in the nation and 8th in the WAC by Athlon, so Beamer may be able to catch him soon, if the Hokies continue their winning ways. Back on the Winning Track: After winning 16 in a row at home from 1999 through the middle of 2001, the Hokies have now lost two home games in a row, to Syracuse (22-14) and Miami (26-24). The Hokies hope to get back on the winning track against ASU Sunday. Going Backwards: In their 50-0 victory over Arkansas State in 1997, the Hokies held the Indians to (-28) yards rushing on 29 carries, a Tech record (tying the record set against Tampa in 1967). The Hokies sacked ASU quarterbacks six times for 42 yards in losses in that game. Lane Stadium Looking Great: Work crews were placing sod and planting shrubbery outside Lane Stadium's South end zone expansion Friday afternoon, and trying to clean up in time for Sunday's game. We will say, once again, for those of you who have not seen the South end zone expansion in person and will do so for the first time Sunday, pictures don't do it justice. Some shrubbery has been planted near the SEZ entrance that spells out HOKIES. You can see a thumbnail to the right, and to view the larger pic, click the thumbnail.
