Football: QB Patrick Dosh This week's football recruiting spotlight falls on Benedictine (Richmond, VA) quarterback Patrick Dosh. The VT coaching staff just recently (within the last 2-3 weeks) offered a scholarship to Dosh, who is rated the #18 prospect in the state of Virginia by Doug Doughty, #23 in the state by SuperPrep, and the #26 "pro-style" QB in the country by Rivals100.com. Dosh (6-3, 215, 4.6 forty) is a good pocket passer who is just a couple hundred yards away from breaking Ronald Curry's state record for career passing yardage (Dosh needs 140 to 240 yards in his last regular-season game, depending upon whom you listen to). Since Dosh plays in the Virginia Independent School League and not the Virginia High School League, his record won't be official. Through 8 games (Benedictine will only play 9 regular-season games this year), Dosh is 118-222 (53%), 1941 yards (242.6 yards per game), 20 TD's, and 5 INT's. Benedictine is 6-2, and they have played some tough competition, going up against larger public schools 5 times this season. Dosh can throw a ball 65 yards in the air, but don't let the pro-style classification fool you. He can run, too. His coach, Gene Smith, says, "We do call some running plays for him, some option. We've got some young kids in the backfield. We're not running the ball as well as we'd like to, so Dosh is probably our best runner as well as passer. When he runs the ball, he's not looking to go out of bounds. He's looking to get every inch he can get." Dosh says, "I do a fair amount of running. My whole career, coming from a private school and playing against big public schools, it's tough to get a lot of real big guys in front of you and give you a lot of time, so I've had to do a fair amount of running in my career. I'd say I run the ball anywhere from eight to ten times a game. I don't mind throwing on the run, that's not a problem for me. I'm definitely not a 'running' quarterback, but I also don't think I'm a quarterback who just sits back there on the pocket. I like to move around and make things happen." Dosh received a scholarship offer from UNC last summer, and he says, "I'm looking at UNC, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Marshall, and a couple of other ACC schools, like N.C. State." His front-runners at this point are the Hokies and Heels, and he says that both schools have great facilities and coaching staffs that he really likes. "One of the major factors is the coaching staff. UNC and Virginia Tech both have great coaching staffs. Location is important to me. I don't want to go real far from home. One set of grandparents lives in Maryland, and the other set lives right next door (in the Richmond area). So they've always been able to come to most of my games. So I'd like to stay on East Coast. "The final thing is just going to be how I feel, and how I think I fit into their system, and how soon I can get the opportunity to play. That's also something that's very important to me. That's just something that I can get one on one with the coaches, and find out their personal opinions on things, and hopefully, they'll be honest with me and let me know. "I was at Virginia Tech this past weekend (for the Syracuse game). I absolutely loved it, it was great. The thing that I admired the most was the coaching staff. I love all of them, they all seem like great guys. They seemed very approachable. They seemed like the kind of guys that if you had a problem, you could definitely go up to them and talk to them about it. I'm trying to get an official visit set up for either the weekend of the 7th (of December) or the 15th." Smith thinks that Dosh will commit to UNC or Tech "around Christmas," but Dosh says he'll pick a school in early or mid-January. Basketball: Fabian Davis and Luke Minor The Hokies recently landed their 7th -- and most highly rated -- verbal commitment for men's basketball when Fabian Davis of Bonner Academy in Raleigh, NC committed to Tech. Davis is 6-6, 215 and has made some Top 150 recruiting lists. At one point, he was even rated #90 by Prep Stars prior to last summer. He is now rated #150 by Prep Stars (click here for their commitment article). Davis averaged 26 points a game as a junior last season. Doug Doughty of the Roanoke Times reports that Davis has yet to qualify, but that he will take the SAT tomorrow. If he makes the necessary score, he will sign with VT in the fall signing period (Nov. 14-21). If not, he'll remain committed to VT with plans to sign in the spring. The Hokies also picked up a big man a couple of weeks ago
when 7-3, 295-pound Luke Minor of Hagerstown (MD) Community College committed to the Hokies. Minor, who was on
Southern Cal's roster for two seasons, one as a redshirt, will play at Hagerstown this season and will enroll at
VT next year with two years of eligibility remaining. For more details on Minor, see
