Jones, 6-3, 245, registered 96 tackles, 28 tackles for loss and 17 sacks during his senior season in 2007. He also blocked three kicks. He was a First Team All-Tidewater and First Team All-Beach District player. Jones chose Virginia Tech over Georgia Tech and Maryland.

"I think Virginia Tech will be a great fit for him," Green Run head coach Shawn Wilson said. "I think Joe has room to put a couple of pounds on him, too. I'm sure he will get bigger and stronger with the excellent weight program that Virginia Tech has. I think he will be in a good position at defensive end. I think it'll work well. I see him becoming like a Chris Ellis-type."
