DE Joe Jones Commits to VT
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com
Virginia Tech picked up a very important commitment on Wednesday when Green Run (Virginia Beach) defensive end Joe Jones informed the coaches that he will be a Hokie. Tech has a major need for defensive linemen in this class, and getting Jones is a big pickup.
Jones, 6-3, 245, registered 96 tackles, 28 tackles for loss and 17 sacks during his senior season in 2007. He also blocked three kicks. He was a First Team All-Tidewater and First Team All-Beach District player. Jones chose Virginia Tech over Georgia Tech and Maryland.
"I think Virginia Tech will be a great fit for him," Green Run head coach Shawn Wilson said. "I think Joe has room to put a couple of pounds on him, too. I'm sure he will get bigger and stronger with the excellent weight program that Virginia Tech has. I think he will be in a good position at defensive end. I think it'll work well. I see him becoming like a Chris Ellis-type."
The Hokies now have 28 commitments for the class of 2008 (see the verbal commitment link below), including 20 from the state of Virginia.
