Doug Thacker Commits

by Will Stewart, TechSideline.com

Virginia Tech has landed commitment #11 for the 2006 recruiting class. Doug “Budd” Thacker, a 6-2, 250-pound defensive tackle prospect out of Seminole High School in Sanford, Florida, has chosen Virginia Tech over offers from Maryland, Mississippi State, Wake Forest and West Virginia, among others.

“From an e-mail I received from his mother this morning, it looks like Budd has committed to Virginia Tech,” Seminole head coach Mick Harris said.

A defensive tackle and offensive guard in high school, look for Thacker to likely play defensive tackle at Virginia Tech. He possesses excellent strength and quickness to go along with his 6-2, 250-pound frame.

“He’s a good athlete,” Harris said in an interview last week. “I think his strength is part of the reason he is as good as he is. Another reason is his motor. A lot of schools really like his motor. We play him on both sides of the ball. He is capable of playing offense or defense on the next level. Defensively, he could be a tackle or an end. The thing that coaches really like about him on defense is his quick start. He has a very, very explosive start.”

Thacker did not have an offer from Virginia Tech until last Thursday, when he made an unofficial visit to Blacksburg for the Boston College game. His father, who is also named Doug Thacker, played football for Virginia Tech in the 1970s.

We'll have a more detailed TSL Pass recruiting update on Thacker's commitment later today.
