DB Purnell Sturdivant Verbals to VT

by Will Stewart,

Safety/rover Purnell Sturdivant of Lake Taylor (Norfolk, VA) High School has long been a Virginia Tech lean, and on his official visit to Blacksburg this weekend, he finally gave his verbal commitment to VT. In so doing, Sturdivant becomes the 18th player in Virginia Tech's 2004 recruiting class.

Rated as a three-star (out of five) player and the #12 recruit in the state by, Sturdivant also had offers from Clemson, Maryland, NC State, and Syracuse (per TSL), plus Michigan, UNC, Penn State and Virginia (per

Despite all this interest, Sturdivant took just one official visit, to Virginia Tech, and throughout his recruiting process, Virginia Tech led. So his commitment comes as no surprise, though it has generated excitement among the VT faithful.

Standing 5-11, weighing 210, and running a 4.5 forty, Sturdivant is a versatile athlete that the Hokies have talked to about playing outside linebacker or strong safety/rover.

Also in recruiting, highly sought-after linebacker Jerod Mayo has some interesting comments in a Sunday TSL Pass update, and big defensive tackle Carl Howard makes some comments that are encouraging for the Hokies, as they battle NC State for Howard's services. WR Eddie Royal plays it close to the vest, and WR Derrick McPhearson, who is also considering Maryland and Florida, talks about his VT visit.

For comments from Sturdivant on why he committed and all the other Sunday updates, see our TSL Pass recruiting updates. For a complete list of VT's verbal commitments for the 2004 recruiting class, click here. For Purnell Sturdivant's TSL player profile, click here.
