RB Kenny Lewis Verbals to Virginia Tech
by Chris Horne

Tailback Kenny Lewis of GW Danville High School has committed to the Hokies.

Lewis, a 5-9, 180-pound speedster, did not receive a scholarship offer from the Hokies until just recently, when the staff got a chance to review film from GW's first four games this season.

Lewis, the son of 1970's VT running back Kenny Lewis, has had a good season so far. He has carried the ball 45 times for 386 yards (8.6 yards per carry) and 4 touchdowns. Lewis's best effort was an 11-carry, 184-yard, 3-TD effort against L.C. Byrd on September 7th. Lewis has also caught 3 passes this season for 8 yards.

We reached Kenny's father this afternoon to confirm the commitment.

"Yes, he has committed," Kenny Lewis the elder told us (he's technically not Kenny Lewis, Sr., because he has no middle name, and Kenny Lewis the younger has the middle name Eugene). "Of all the schools, this was the best choice for us as a family. Kenny has grown up around Virginia Tech. We know what they have to offer. Academically, all of his needs can be met. We know the coaches. We can't wait to get there."

Lewis has been told so far that he will be given a shot at running back. "He's a little bit faster than Dad was," his dad said.

The younger Lewis is also a standout baseball player who has a chance to get drafted. Will he play baseball at Tech? "Coach Beamer has given us permission to play both sports," the father said. "Football is the priority, but we will have to see. I think there is a big chance he will be drafted. If it happens, we will have to look at it and see what's on the table at that time.

"But for now, we are very excited and look forward to it [Kenny going to VT]."

Lewis is rated the #21 player in the state by the Roanoke Times and the #28 player in the state by TechSideline.com (with a new TSL ranking to be released soon). He is ranked as a two-star player (out of five) by Rivals.com.

Lewis has been timed at 21.7 seconds in the 200 meter and 6.1 in 60 meters. He is the eleventh commitment for the 2003 Virginia Tech football recruiting class.
