The Richmond Times-Dispatch and BeamerBall.com reported Wednesday that Sean Glennon has been named as the #2 quarterback behind Bryan Randall, and that Cory Holt will hold down the #3 spot. But despite this depth chart move, the issue doesn’t appear to be completely settled, leaving the door open for Holt to continue to battle for the position.

Holt has been dealing with a sore throwing shoulder, limiting his effectiveness, and Glennon has been a quick study of the offense and a player with a knack for the position. With the BCA Classic against USC just ten days away, it was time for Frank Beamer to name a second-stringer, and he tabbed Glennon.

However, the Times-Dispatch reported Wednesday evening, "Beamer emphasized that the competition between Glennon and Holt is not closed." Beamer later commented on BeamerBall.com that the Hokies would "continue to work" both quarterbacks, an indicator that the competition will be ongoing. Normally, the third string quarterback would become the scout team QB, imitating the opposition's offense in practice, and the #2 quarterback would get a lot of work with the VT offense. If both Holt and Glennon are going to get snaps with the VT offense, instead of Holt playing scout team QB, that's an indicator that Glennon's position as #2 isn't set in stone.

The instant one of them enters a game and therefore loses the chance to redshirt this season, that will seal the deal, and the other, barring injury, will not play in 2005.

Beamer noted on BeamerBall.com that the Hokies have made up their travel squad roster, which typically numbers about 65 players, and it includes 11 true freshmen and 11 redshirt freshmen. The travel squad has not been released yet, but bouncing those numbers off the depth chart reveals that the following lists of players are probably the freshmen who will be traveling, barring injury between now and August 28th.

TSL sources report that cornerback Dorian Porch from Calhoun, GA has committed to the Hokies, and recruiting services Rivals.com and TheInsiders.com verified the news Wednesday with comments from Porch's coach, Bill Long.

TSL recruiting analyst Chris Horne is currently on vacation, and attempts to reach Porch were unsuccessful. We have changed his status in the recruiting database to "VT Verbal" and will continue to try to reach him for an interview on his commitment to the Hokies.

Porch is 5-11 and approximately 185 pounds, with 4.4 speed in the forty. When Chris Horne interviewed him on August 10th, he had offers from Kentucky and Wisconsin, as well as the Hokies, and stated that VT was his clear leader. Porch obviously decided to get the commitment done before his senior year.

Porch is the ninth player to commit to Virginia Tech for the 2005 football recruiting class. Click here to see a list of VT verbals. In addition to the nine players listed, 2004 signees Brandon Holland and Sam Wheeler are attending Hargrave with plans to enroll at Virginia Tech later.

The Hokie men's basketball team released their 2004-05 schedule Wednesday, and it looks like every Hokie basketball fan's version of heaven. VT will host -- hold on to your hat -- UNC, Clemson, N.C. State, Virginia, Wake Forest, Duke, and Maryland in Cassell Coliseum. The Miami Hurricanes will also visit Blacksburg.

Virginia Tech's first ever ACC basketball game will be against UNC on December 19th, when the Tar Heels visit for a 3:30 p.m. game.

The ACC will have a record 261 games televised this coming season, and the Hokies are the beneficiary of 18 of those games -- 17 regular season games and an ACC tournament contest. VT's game against Duke on Thursday, Feb. 17th will be televised on ESPN2, and the other Tech games on TV will be a combination of games on Comcast SportsNet, Fox SportsNet, Fox SportsNet South, and Jefferson Pilot/Raycom.

Out of conference, the Hokies play powerhouse Mississippi State, clashing with the Bulldogs on Dec. 30th in the Sugar Bowl Tournament in New Orleans.

• Channel 10 out of Roanoke reported Wednesday that Marcus Vick's retrial for his conviction on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor is scheduled for January 10th and 11th, 2005.

• The Massachusetts Superior Court ruled Wednesday in Boston College's favor in their dispute with the Big East, saying that the October 6, 2003 amendment to the Big East Constitution was not adopted in accordance with the Constitution and is therefore invalid, and Boston College is entitled to withdraw from the Big East Conference on July 1, 2005 for an exit fee of $1 million. The Eagles had been facing a $5 million exit fee if they withdrew then, after the Big East raised exit fees last October in the wake of the defection of Miami and Virginia Tech to the ACC. The ruling clears the way for the ACC to go to 12 teams for the 2005-06 academic year and to conduct their first football championship game after the 2005 season.

• Backup defensive end Isaac Montgomery has given up football, due to bad knees, according to BeamerBall.com. Montgomery transferred to VT from North Carolina as a defensive tackle and was never able to crack the two-deep in his two years of eligibility at Virginia Tech. He will remain at Tech and will stay involved with the football program.
