Defense and penalties dominated the Hokies' first fall scrimmage Saturday, with Chris Clifton providing the only TD on a 63-yard option keeper.

The scrimmage, which went 46 plays, featured mostly backups. Bryan Randall ran the first team offense for 12 plays, Marcus Vick ran the second team offense for 18 plays, and Chris Clifton ran the third team offense for 10 plays. Redshirt Winston Roett ran the third team offense for the other six plays.

Offensive Stats

Offensive highlights were a 63-yard TD run on an option keeper by Clifton, a 36-yard slant pattern from Vick to Clifton, a 16-yard run by Cedric Humes, and a 15-yard completion from Vick to true freshman David Clowney (who continues to receive rave reviews from practice observers).

Here are the stats (all approximate) for the offensive players:

Marcus Vick: 6-for-8 for 73 yards.
Bryan Randall:  2-for-3 for 1 yard.
Chris Clifton: 0-for-2 with an interception.

Running Backs
Mike Imoh: 5 rushes, 12 yards.
John Candelas: 5 rushes, 6 yards.
Thomas McClelland: 5 rushes, 6 yards.
Kevin Jones: 3 rushes, 6 yards.
Cedric Humes: 1 rush, 16 yards.
Steve Canter: 1 rush, 3 yards.
Doug Easlick: 1 rush, -1 yard.

Receivers
Cedric Humes: 2 catches, 9 yards.
Chris Clifton: 1 catch, 36 yards.
David Clowney: 1 catch, 15 yards.
Brenden Hill: 1 catch, 8 yards.
Jared Mazzetta: 1 catch, 8 yards.
Michael Malone: 1 catch, 5 yards.
Doug Easlick: 1 catch, 1 yard.
Steve Canter: 1 catch, 0 yards.

Defensive Stats

Reserve defensive tackle Isaac Montgomery led the way with two sacks, one each of Randall and Vick. Corey Gordon had an interception (off of Clifton), and there was one sack each from Cols Colas, Tim Sandidge, and Kevin Lewis.

Hokie Hotline Gets Underway Tonight
TV Show Already Started

The Advance Auto Parts Hokie Hotline radio show debuts tonight on stations throughout the Tech radio network. The show has increased in length to two hours this year and will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tonight's show features voice of the Hokies Bill Roth, Frank Beamer, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Bryan Stinespring, and Tech Athletic Director Jim Weaver. The show will originate from Beamer's Restaurant in Christiansburg, and fans are welcome to come by.

Hokies Ranked #9 by AP

The Associated Press preseason football poll came out this weekend, and the Hokies are ranked #9 in the country, which ties the 2001 team for the highest preseason AP ranking ever.

Other teams of note:

• Oklahoma is #1, Ohio State #2.
• Big East teams: Miami is #3, VT #9, and Pittsburgh #10.
• VT opponents: Virginia #18.
• Other ACC teams: FSU #13, Maryland #15, and NC State #16.

In the "Others Receiving Votes" category are Texas A&M (#30), Boston College (#45), and West Virginia (#46).

Game Times Set for First Five Games

The VT Athletic Department announced that the starting times of the first five games have been set:

• Aug. 31st: UCF, 3 p.m. (ESPN).
• Sep. 6th: JMU, 1 p.m. (no TV).
• Sep. 18th: Texas A&M, 7:30 p.m. (ESPN).
• Sep. 27th: UConn, noon (Big East Network).
• Oct. 4th: @ Rutgers, noon (Big East Network).
