Hokies for the Hungry The Marching Virginians, Virginia Tech's marching band, will sponsor a massive canned food drive in conjunction with the VT vs. Syracuse football game on Saturday, October 27. The goal of the ambitious HOKIES FOR THE HUNGRY drive is to collect fifty thousand cans of food. Dr. Paul E. Torgersen, former president of the University, is serving as Honorary Chairman of HOKIES FOR THE HUNGRY. "I am pleased to be working with The Marching Virginians in this very worthwhile undertaking," stated Torgersen. "I’ve had a close relationship with the MVs and this is but one more service that they’re providing through Virginia Tech for its surrounding community." Drop-off points for HOKIES FOR THE HUNGRY will be set up outside of Lane Stadium, at the Marching Virginians’ practice field, and across campus where Tailgate Pep Bands will be stationed prior to the noon kick-off. First BCS Rankings Due Out at 7 PM Today The initial 2001 BCS rankings are due out today, at 7 o'clock tonight (watch ESPN to see them). Preliminary unofficial BCS rankings have the Hokies listed at #5 behind Oklahoma, Nebraska, UCLA, and Miami. One of the teams in front of Tech in the BCS rankings (if the unofficial version is correct) will fall this weekend when Oklahoma visits Nebraska. Kenneth Massey, whose computer rankings are included in the BCS rankings, has a link at his web site which lists his rankings and includes commentary regarding the effect of margin of victory, schedule strength, and other factors that influence the computer component of the BCS formula.
