On Thursday, NC State publicly announced a deal to play a home and home football series with Virginia Tech in 2005 and 2006. The two-game series will see the Wolfpack visiting Blacksburg in 2005, with Virginia Tech traveling to Raleigh in 2006.

The games renew a rivalry that has seen NC State and Tech play 44 times over the years. That series ranks as #7 in Virginia Tech history in terms of games played, behind Virginia, VMI, William and Mary, Richmond, Washington & Lee, and West Virginia. The Hokies lead the series 23-17-4.

The last meeting between the Wolfpack and Virginia Tech was in 1992, when the teams battled to a 13-13 tie in Blacksburg. In that game, N.C. State entered the contest ranked #21 in the country, and Tech starting QB Maurice DeShazo went down with an injury. Backup QB Treg Koel led Tech to a 13-10 lead late in the game, but NCSU kicker Steve Videtich coaxed a wounded-duck field goal over the crossbar with no time left for the tie.

That game ended a seven-year stretch that saw the teams play five times, beginning with Tech's 25-24 win in the 1986 Peach Bowl. The teams followed that with a four-game series played in 1989 (a 25-23 VT road win), 1990 (a 20-16 VT home win), 1991 (a painful 7-0 loss on the road), and 1992.

The widely-reported deal between LSU and Virginia Tech is still in the works, and no new news is available at this time. Virginia Tech has also not publicly acknowledged the N.C. State deal at this time.

According to a hokiesportsinfo.com press release, the Virginia Tech men's basketball team's out-of-division opponents in 2001-02 will be Rutgers and Seton Hall at home, and Syracuse and West Virginia on the road.

The four out-of-division games will supplement a schedule of twelve in-division games. In the division, the Hokies play home-and-home games every year with Boston College, Connecticut, Miami, Providence, St. John's, and Villanova.
