August 5, 1996 Watching the People Who Watch the Hokies The Big East football conference had its media day in Giants Stadium in New Jersey last Thursday, August 1, and it was a pretty uneventful day, from what I can tell. The media picked Syracuse first in the conference, Miami second, VT third, WVU fourth, BC fifth, and then....you know, whatever. Surprisingly enough, Temple was not picked last. Rutgers was. Third is about where we belong, I think. With road games at SU and Miami, as a matter of fact, I would be satisfied with a third place finish this year, mainly because it would take us the one place we haven't been the last three years - Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami and the Car Quest Bowl (prettly lame, huh? Being happy about third place because I'd get to go to Miami? What's happening to me?) I would be pretty happy with a second place finish, and ecstatic with a first place finish. Lower than third? I don't want to talk about it. But I will go on record as saying that if we go to Memphis this year, I'll be there. Anyway, I noticed that The Roanoke Times covered the ACC media day, which occurred a few days earlier, heavier than they did the Big East media day. The ACC media day generated two days worth of articles, and the Big East media day only generated one article. Oh, well, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Some Wahoo at The Roanoke Times must have gotten promoted. (By the way, I wouldn't want to be UVa - ugh - this year when they play FSU. Florida State is already talking about the rematch. Bones will be broken that day, folks. Many bones, all of them orange and blue.) As for the TV stations, I've always been more pleased with Channel 10's coverage than Channel 7's. As I've said before, Channel 7 has a bad habit of talking about UVa (ugh) first and Tech second. 10 is the NBC affiliate and 7 is the CBS affiliate, so with the new CBS contract coming up, you would think that maybe Channel 7 would cover the Hokies a little better, in order to hype the product, right? Wrong. On Big East media day, Channel 7 didn't have a single story. Channel 10 did their usual good job, even sending a reporter up to New Jersey and getting quotes from Beamer and Conaty, but WDBJ-7 was up to their old tricks. The more things change..... Get a clue, Channel 7. Cover the Hokies. Get excited. Promote the product. Increase ratings. Etc., etc. |
