Daytona testing brings NASCAR buzz back

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) There's a buzz at Daytona International Speedway, and it's more than the cars humming around the track.

A three-day testing session that concluded Saturday brought fans to the storied speedway a full month before season-opening Daytona 500 on Feb. 20. They were treated to autograph sessions, question-and-answer forums, and, of course, practice laps, from every driver in attendance.

For new track president Joie Chitwood, it was the perfect kickoff for what he hopes is a frantic month of ticket sales leading into NASCAR's biggest race of the season.

Notebook: Even with smaller plate, top speeds soar at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sporting News) - After a tire test on Daytona International Speedway's new pavement in December, NASCAR mandated a smaller restrictor plate to slow the Sprint Cup cars.

In one sense, however, the change may have allowed them to go faster. When NASCAR reduced the holes in the plates from 30/32 of an inch to 29/32 for this week's three-day test, it gave the cars enough stability to draft in pairs. (MORE)
