Blacksburg, VA -- Virginia Tech scored 62 points in the first 35 minutes of the game and then coasted to victory, pounding a severely overmatched Florida A&M team on the way to the Hokies' second shutout of the season. VT turned five FAMU turnovers into touchdowns, and Bryan Randall threw four first-half touchdown passes before giving way to backup Sean Glennon.

Seven different Hokies scored touchdowns, including two, Jesse Allen and Blake Warren, who scored for the first time in their collegiate careers. Allen scored on a 9-yard pass from Randall midway through the second quarter, and Warren scored the Hokies' last TD on a 46 yard interception return early in the second half.

Any hope Florida A&M had of staying competitive in this game disappeared quickly when Rattlers QB Ben Dougherty was sacked by Tech's Jim Davis on the third play of the game and fumbled. Darryl Tapp recovered for the Hokies (5-2, 2-1 ACC) on the FAMU 16, and VT scored on the next play when Randall hit David Clowney with a sideline pass that the sophomore receiver turned into a TD by juking two defenders for the score.

From there, the Hokies poured it on the hapless Rattlers, who had trouble punting (an 11-yard kick), passing (in a rare double, defensive linemen Darryl Tapp and Kevin Lewis both had interceptions), and holding onto the football (Dougherty fumbled the ball to Lewis on a late-2nd quarter sack by Chris Ellis). The Hokies scored on their first eight possessions before the first half clock mercifully expired on Tech's ninth possession with the Hokies holding a 48-0 lead.

Of those first eight possessions, the Hokies started on FAMU's side of the field six times, leading to touchdown scoring drives of 16, 33, 13, 9 and 29 yards. In addition to Clowney and Allen, Randall threw scoring strikes to Jeff King (10 yards) and Josh Hyman (20 yards). Randall (9-of-14, 115 yards, no interceptions) didn't even play the full first half, giving way to backup Sean Glennon with 6:38 remaining before half time. Glennon (4-of-7, 58 yards) promptly led the Hokies on a 4-play, 29-yard scoring drive, capped with a 3-yard run by Humes (17 carries, 120 yards, 2 TDs).

The Hokies drove 72 yards to open the second half, scoring on a 1-yard run by Humes, and on FAMU's first possession of the half, Blake Warren cut in front of a screen pass attempt by Doughtery, picked it off, and ran it 46 yards for the final touchdown.

The Hokie offense stalled after that, as VT substituted liberally at all positions. FAMU stopped the Hokies on a 4th and 1 run by Justin Hamilton (10 carries, 59 yards), recovered a fumble by Allen, and stopped the Hokies on a 4th and 3 run by John Candelas.

Meanwhile, the Rattlers finally got things going on offense against the Hokie 2nd- and 3rd-stringers but still couldn't score. FAMU had two possessions of 15 plays in the second half, one of which went for 47 yards and ended on downs on the Hokie 1-yard line when VT subbed many starters back into the game to preserve the shutout. The Hokies stuffed a 4th and goal from the 1 for that stop, and the second 15-play possession by FAMU went 84 yards from the FAMU 2 to the Tech 14, where it ended on 4th and 6 with an incomplete pass.

Spectacular and unusual plays abounded. Tapp's interception came when he and Davis crashed the pocket, Doughtery's pass was tipped, and the ball was batted around a few times before Tapp caught it lying on his back on the FAMU 13.

Lewis' interception came on a zone blitz. The Hokies pressured Dougherty into firing a pass into the middle of the field, where Lewis, who had dropped back into coverage unseen, picked it off at the FAMU 22 and ran it back to the 9. The big DT was close to rumbling in for a TD but was cut down by the last man with a chance to stop him.

Randall had a 68-yard TD run wiped out by a block in the back, and Jimmy Williams had a 49-yard punt return for a TD removed from the books by a 12-men-on-the-field penalty against Tech.
