Game StoryPISCATAWAY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Michael Vick needed only one half to ruin Rutgers' homecoming.
Vick tied a school record with four touchdown passes and ran for another score as No. 5 Virginia Tech remained undefeated with a 58-20 pounding of Rutgers in a Big East Conference matchup.
Vick completed 11-of-12 passes for 248 yards as Virginia Tech (5-0, 1-0 Big East) rolled to a 49-14 halftime lead. Vick and most of the Hokies' starters sat out the second half in their seventh straight win over Rutgers.
"It was good to come up to Rutgers and get our first conference win," said Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer. "I'm very proud of our team. We ended up playing very well, as our offense seems to be getting better quickly. Our offense is really coming around. In the second half I felt we had things under control and was happy to have the opportunity to play more of our athletes."
Virginia Tech scored on the first play from scrimmage as Vick found Andre Davis for a 74-yard score and a 7-0 lead just 18 seconds in. The teams traded touchdowns before Vick hooked up with Davis for a 13-yard TD that gave the Hokies a 21-14 advantage 2:53 into the second quarter. Davis had four receptions for a career-best 157 yards.
Shyrone Stith was held under 100 yards for the first time this season, but totaled 59 yards on 15 carries. Stith's two-yard scoring run pushed Virginia Tech's lead to 28-14 with 7:39 remaining in the second.
Mike McMahon ran for a score and threw a touchdown pass for Rutgers (0-5, 0-2) before leaving with a sprained right shoulder in the second quarter. McMahon completed 3-of-10 passes for 67 yards.
"We now have to look at the season in a matter of halves," said Rutgers coach Terry Shea. "The first half is over. We were 0-5 in that first part but we have six games left. Can we go 3-3 or 4-2? That's the focus of our team right now. How good can we make the second half of the season?"
McMahon's 12-yard run tied it, 7-7, 4:15 into the game. The Hokies answered on their following possession with Jarrett Ferguson's 20-yard run making it 14-7 with 6:35 left in the first. Rutgers came back to tie it for the final time 73 seconds later as tight end L.J. Smith caught a 36-yard pass from McMahon.
Virginia Tech started in Rutgers' territory on four of its five second-quarter touchdowns.
"Rutgers gave us a great challenge in the first quarter, but we were able to execute very well on offense and withstand Rutgers' momentum," Vick said. "I haven't had a game like today since high school. In the second quarter I felt like I was in the zone. Our offense really clicked tonight and I felt we showed a lot of poise. We have been improving each week."
The Hokies increased the lead to 35-14 when Vick hooked up with Ricky Hall for a 36-yard TD with 3:39 to go in the second. Vick had a 22-yard run to make it 42-14 with 1:40 left and he threw a five-yard pass to Hall 26 seconds before the break.
Andre Kendrick replaced Stith and had a 10-yard run, giving the Hokies a 56-14 bulge with 6:21 left in the third quarter.
Seth Stanton scored on an 11-yard TD run for Rutgers with 4:36 to go in the fourth, but Virginia Tech cornerback Ronyell Whitaker returned the extra point attempt for a defensive conversion.
