Beerman's Picks
by Ben Shapiro, 9/26/02

Each week this season, I will be posting a column previewing the upcoming weekend's Big East and Top-25 match-ups. All rankings are from the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. I don't pick winners (that's too easy), I pick against the spread.  All picks are for entertainment purposes only.

Last Week: A fun road trip.  Without question the best time I've ever had at an away game.  I can't say enough about the good folks down there in College Station.  Had an absolute blast!

This Week: The Top 25 is awash with mediocre games.  Where exactly is Kalamazoo, anyway?  If you've done the Hokie tour for the last month, maybe it's time to get in some quality time with your significant other, mow that lawn, or just lie around and be lazy for an entire weekend.  Mmmm .... lazy ....

Not in Action: #1 Miami (FL), #8 Oregon, #10 Notre Dame, #16 Wisconsin, #17 Kansas State.

Thursday, September 26
7:30 pm EST ESPN
-15 Florida State (#4) 4-0 (Away: 2-0)
  Louiseville 2-2 (Home: 0-1)
Hey check it out, I get to root for Florida State!

The best part of watching FSU play bottom level ACC teams, is observing how they really do treat such games as full contact practices.  Against lowly France they pounded the running game over and over and over, just to see what their O-line was capable off.  Last week against Dook they held a second scrimmage.  The Noles barely touched the ground game, preferring instead to work on the fine timing of their passing game, and to get backup QB Adrian McPherson some much needed reps.

As a counterpoint, against defending ACC Champs Maryland, they played a "real" game.  They ran a balanced attack and clamped down hard on defense.  Expect more of the same against CUSA contender Cardinals.

Pick: FSU
Saturday, September 28
3:30 pm EST ESPN+, Gameplan
-31 Texas (#2) 3-0 (Away: 1-0)
  Tulane 2-2 (Home: 1-0)
This game will go on.  In the advent of a Hurricane, the Superdome can be used as a flotation device.
Pick: Texas
7:00 pm EST TBS
  South Florida 2-1 (Away: 0-1)
-28 Oklahoma (#3) 3-0 (Home: 2-0)
Shhhh.  Quiet.  Oklahoma's #3 and no one's talking about them at all.
Pick: Okie
12:00 pm EST ESPN+, Gameplan
-22.5 Virginia Tech (#5) 4-0 (Away: 1-0)
  Western Michigan 1-2 (Home: 1-0)
First game all year I'm not going to see in person.  Then again, there's something relaxing about sitting on a bar stool, sucking on the suds as I actually get to hear the commentary and see the replays.  Away games have a charm all their own.

Gary Darnell says that the Western Michigan quarterback situation is "up in the air".  I say nonsense.  No matter who's taking snaps their situation is likely to be "flat on their back."  If he's even on the field; Western Michigan has had a fair amount of trouble stopping the run this year.  That's trouble when our QB is a bit gimpy and both of our RBs have some stats to pad to make up for last week.  This game could look a lot like Marshall, only without quite the same aerial show from the opposition.

Pick: HOKIES!
12:00 pm EST ESPN+, Gameplan
  Indiana 2-2 (Away: 0-2)
-27.5 Ohio State (#6) 4-0 (Home: 3-0)
Don't let last game fool you.  Ohio State is most certainly for real.  They ran into a highly motivated team with a good quarterback and a lot to prove.  They were missing their star tailback and still managed to hang on.  Being a champion doesn't always mean blowing out everyone.  Being a champion sometimes means puling out a "W" when by all rights you should have lost.
Pick: tOSU
1:00 pm EST
New Mexico State 1-2 (Away: 0-2)
(off) Georgia (#7) 3-0 (Home: 2-0)
Nowhere, I mean nowhere are people happier to see Spurrier gone than in Athens, GA.  For once, they can say that they have a realistic shot at winning the SEC title!
Pick: UGA
3:30 pm EST CBS
  Kentucky 4-0 (Away: 1-0)
-19.5 Florida (#9) 3-1 (Home: 2-1)
vedy vedy interesting...

Well not so much actually.  Kentucky is off to a fine start, but they just don't have the horses to hang with the Gators for long.  If it's basketball turn it around, but it's the Foosball, so the 'Cats are sunk.

Hey, and how bout how Kentucky turned it around just in time to get that postseason ban!  Viva la SEC!

Pick: UK
7:00 pm EST ppv
  Rutgers 1-3 (Away: 0-1)
-40.5 Tennessee (#11) 2-1 (Home: 2-1)
Gotta love them Scarlet Knights, always there when you need a nice ego boost.
Pick: Vols
12:00 pm EST ESPN
  Iowa 3-1 (Away: 1-0)
-8 Penn State (#12) 3-0 (Home: 2-0)
Hey, that Michael Robinson kid looks to be pretty good.  Anyone here ever heard of him before now? ;o)  That's trouble for Iowa.  They've got a solid offense and run defense, but the secondary is sketchy at best.  JoePa may not be the most flamboyant offensive coach that ever walked the sideline, but he knows how to utilize his team's strengths.  I do kind of like Iowa, though.  They've won the last two against PSU, and the Nits always seem to sleepwalk through one game per year.  Could this be it?
Pick: Hawkeyes
3:30 pm EST
  Idaho 1-3 (Away: 0-3)
-30.5 Washington (#13) 2-1 (Home: 2-0)
Spudbowl 2002.  What a winnah!
Pick: UDub
3:30 pm EST ABC, Gameplan
-7.5 Michigan (#14) 3-1 (Away: 0-1)
  Illinois 1-3 (Home: 0-2)
Last year this game decided the Big Ten title.  This year, it's almost meaningless.  Illinois has a serious Sugar Bowl hangover, and can't seem to beat anyone not named Arkansas State.

Michigan is the archetype plodding Big Ten behemoth this year.  It's a defense-first team.  That's fine of course, but not when you can't even kick field goals.  It probably won't be the Illini, but Michigan's going to drop a couple more along the way.

Pick: Illinois
1:00 pm EST
  Massachusets (I-AA) 2-1 (Away: 0-1)
(no line) N. C. State 5-0 (Home: 3-0)
Wow.  Two I-AA opponents in one year.  The 'Pack was out of the MNC hunt before the first snap of the season.
Pick: Stronger scheduling
5:00 pm EST
(off) Washington State (#18) 3-1 (Away: 0-1)
  California 3-1 (Home: 2-1)
Well Cinderella's bubble just burst, just two points and one week shy of conference play to boot.

OK, so there's no line set for this game.  Standard procedure when one team's top two quarterbacks are nursing injuries.  But we all know Wazzou is favored right?  It's just a question of by how much.  So given that assumption, I'm making Cal my upset special.  No matter the line, they cover if they win outright.

Pick: Cal
3:30 pm EST ABC, Gameplan
  Nebraska (#19) 3-1 (Away: 0-1)
-pk- Iowa State (#21) 4-1 (Home: 3-1)
Iowa State at even money.  Think about that.

I don't think that there has ever been a time in their history where Nebraska has been faced with a defining game in Ames, Iowa.  There is now.  We all saw the big fat egg that the Huskers laid up in State College.  Their offense is struggling with inexperience all over the field, and their defense has been rolled for 35+ points in three of their last seven games.  It isn't panic time yet, but if the Cyclones can seize this opportunity there's going to be an awful lot of unhappy corner store talk in Huskerland.  Their one saving grace is that they've had two weeks to figure out what's going wrong.

The Clones are jacked up.  You couldn't write them a better script.  They're getting the chance to knock Nebraska out of the Top 25 for the first time since the leather helmet era.  At home.  On network television.  If you haven't seen Seneca Wallace play yet, it's time to tune in and get your learn on.

Pick: Nebraska
12:30 pm EST ESPN+, Jefferson Pilot
  Mississippi State 1-2 (Away: 0-1)
-13 LSU (#20) 2-1 (Home: 2-0)
I don't know what happened to Mississippi State.  They used to be good didn't they?  They had that whole "all defense - no offense" thing going on pretty strong.  It ain't perfect, but it wins more often than not in college.  Now though, sheesh, they don't even have that anymore.  I think they've been stealing plays from Texas A&M, but they got the wrong half of the playbook.

The Tigs should handle them pretty well I'd hope.

Pick: LSU
6:30 pm EST FoxSportsNet
  Oregon State (#24) 4-0 (Away: 1-0)
-3 Southern California (#22) 2-1 (Home: 1-0)
Last week Kansas State proved that they are "for real" by defeating the Pac Ten glamour boys from Southern Cal.  This week Oregon State gets to try to do the same.  Of course, that presupposes that USC themselves are "for real," a moniker I have trouble affixing to any Pete Carroll-coached team.  Then again, Oregon State doesn't win at USC.  It just doesn't happen.  Not in the last 40 years.

Beavers and Trojans.  Tee-hee :o)

Pick: U of SC
4:00 pm EST
-11.5 Colorado State (#23) 3-1 (Away: 2-1)
  Nevada 2-1 (Home: 2-0)
Is there any team in the nation hotter than Nevada right now?  They've actually got a winning streak for the first time in years!  Let's go Cowboys!  No wait, that's Wyoming.  What's Nevada anyway?  Oh yeah ... let's go Wolfpack!
Pick: CSU
9:00 pm EST ESPN2
  Syracuse 1-2 (Away: 0-1)
-14 Auburn (#25) 3-1 (Home: 2-0)
All right, so with the standard 0-2 opening out of the way, Syracuse will now start to play up to their capabilities right?  Well it sure would be nice!  Last year's Auburn game started the Cuse on their way to a 10 win season.  Syracuse's defense has been much maligned since getting rolled by BYU, but that's hardly a rare trick by the Cougs.  This could be a statement game for the Big Orange.  Let's hope they make the right one.

Auburn is coming off a brutal stretch of 4 games in only 18 days.  They're a bit banged up, and they've got to be exhausted.  Jordan-Hare is not among the easiest places to play, but if there's such a thing as a good time to do it, today is that time.

Pick: Cuse
12:00 pm EST
  Central Michigan 3-1 (Away: 1-1)
-20 Boston College 2-1 (Home: 2-0)
Tom O'Brien is obviously a quality coach, and he seems to know a little something about slowing down Miami.  He's got to do something about the woeful lack of team speed, however, if Boston College is ever going to aspire to a conference title.
Pick: CMU
12:00 pm EST
-4.5 Cincinnati 1-2 (Away: 0-0)
  Temple 1-3 (Home: 1-2)
Well this one just got interesting.  If Cinci has to go with their backup QB, does Temple stand a chance?  If it were anyone else, I'd say yes.
Pick: Cinci
12:00 pm EST ESPN+, Gameplan
  East Carolina 1-2 (Away: 0-2)
-7 West Virginia 2-1 (Home: 1-0)
Go 'Eers right?  Right.  Go 'Eers!  So long as it's on Gameplan and not preempting my Hokies broadcast, I'm all about them 'Eers.
Pick: WVU
1:30 pm EST
  Toledo 3-1 (Away: 1-1)
-4.5 Pittsburgh 3-1 (Home: 2-1)
Western Michigan, Central Michigan, and now Toledo.  Must be MAC week in the Big East.

UPitt's offense is flat out awful.  They couldn't execute against Rutgers.  I was prepared to excuse their struggles against UAB, until the Blazers went and got stomped 34-0 by Louisiana-Lafayette last week.  Nope, UPitt hasn't even been getting it done against bad teams.  Maybe they're just playing possum until they have to play us.  Yeah.  That's probably how it's gonna work.

Pick: Mud Hens

Last Week:
12-7 (YTD: 49-46-3)

TV Game of the Week: Nebraska at Iowa State

Upset Special: Cal over Washington State (YTD: 4-2)
