Charlottesville, VA -- Carrie Mason's 15 first-half points powered the Virginia Tech women's basketball team to their first-ever win in Charlottesville, as the Hokies defeated #24-ranked Virginia 63-62. Tech turned away a last-second attempt by UVa's Brandi Teamer to hang on for the win.
The Hokies led 36-30 at half and almost ran away from the Cavaliers with a 12-4 run to open the second half, taking a 48-34 lead with fifteen minutes to go. Virginia, led by Teamer (a game-high 19 points) and LaTonya Blue (15 points, all in the second half), stormed back, getting a steal and a layup from Anna Prillaman that closed the gap to 59-57 with three and a half minutes to go.
Tech's Ieva Kublina, who didn't score in the first half and only had 7 points for the game, hit two free throws to put the Hokies up 61-57. Kerri Gardin boosted the lead to 63-57 with two and a half minutes to go, and the Hokies appeared to be out of the woods, but Prillaman hit a three-pointer with two minutes to go and Teamer hit a shot with 42 seconds left to go to make it 63-62.
After a missed shot by Tech's Dawn Chriss with 13 seconds to go, the Cavaliers took possession. Virginia Tech, with two fouls to give before the bonus took effect, fouled Virginia players twice inside ten seconds, the second coming with 4.8 seconds to go. Virginia set up their in-bounds play and got the ball to Teamer, who was triple-teamed and missed a shot in the paint. Virginia's Tiffany Sardin had a shot at a layup but missed it, and time expired, leading to a wild celebration by Tech's players on the court.
Mason finished with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting (3-of-5 from three-point range) to lead Tech. Chriss chipped in 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting and 6 rebounds. Kublina shot just 2-of-11 but had a team-high 10 rebounds to go with her 7 points. Frontcourt mate Erin Gibson had 6 points and 6 rebounds.
The win sends Tech to 2-0 on the season. The Hokies next head out to the Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam, where they will face Iowa State on Friday.
