Virginia Tech 80, William and Mary 63
by Will Stewart, TechSideline.com, 11/28/04
Williamsburg, VA -- Virginia Tech
got 20 points from Jamon Gordon in his best outing of the year and used a first-half spurt to build a big lead and
cruise to a 17-point win over the William and Mary Tribe in William and Mary Hall. Gordon was joined in double figures
by Carlos Dixon (18 points), Zabian Dowdell (17) and Deron Washington (10), as the Hokies move to 3-0 on the year.
Gordon shot 8-of-11 overall, including 4-of-6 from three point range, and he was credited
with 2 steals, though he was much more disruptive than that, and the official scorers may have missed a few.
For most of the first half, this game was nip and tuck. The Hokies built leads of 14-7 and 23-15, but an offensive
dry spell over four minutes long saw the Hokies holding a lead of just 26-20 with five minutes to go in the half.
The Hokies closed the half on a 16-5 run to take a 42-25 lead into the break, and they wasted no time jumping on the
Tribe when the second half started. Tech freshman Deron Washingto, who is averaging 18 points per game thus far, soared
for a huge tomahawk dunk to put the Hokies up 44-25. William and Mary fought back to close the gap to 53-39 at one
point, but VT pushed it back to 19 points, 64-45, on a 3-pointer by Zabian Dowdell with 8 minutes to go. VT took their
biggest lead at 78-56.
The Hokies got 64 of their 80 points from the perimeter and shot 32 of 62 (51.6%) from the field, including 9-of-18
from three-point range. The Hokies were outrebounded 38-28 by the Tribe, but on the upside, VT forced 20 William and
Mary turnovers and scored 21 points off them. After the game, Tech Coach Seth Greenberg expressed concern with his
team's rebounding and interior defense, but he acknowledged that he's had those same concerns all year, and they're not
new.
Corey Cofield led the Tribe with 14 points, and W&M (2-2) also got 11 from Nathan Mann. Virginia Tech (2-0) returns
home and will play UT-Chattanooga Thursday at 8 PM in Cassell Coliseum. The game will be broadcast by Comcast SportsNet.
