Charlottesville, VA -- Virginia held Virginia Tech at bay with the three-pointer in the first half and then put the Hokies away with the inside game in the second half, pulling away for an 80-65 win over the shorthanded and outmanned Hokies. VT got the jump on the Hoos in this one, bolting to a 15-8 lead behind the scoring of Philip McCandies. McCandies scored all 11 of his points in the first seven minutes of the game, and his final bucket put the Hokies up 17-11. Virginia fought off the Hokies behind the hot three-point shooting of Todd Billet, who hit 4-of-5 three-pointers in the first half, in which the Cavaliers shot 7-of-12 from behind the arc as a team. Despite the rain of threes from UVa, VT still managed a 9-0 run that put them up 30-26 with 4:35 to go in the half. From there, it was all Virginia. First the Hoos finished the first half on their own 9-0 run to take a 35-30 lead, and then they started going down inside to Elton Brown, who dominated much of the second half. As Virginia opened a 67-50 lead, Hokie post players McCandies and Allen Calloway fouled out, along with freshman guard Jamon Gordon. Virginia Tech, which played four players 36 minutes or more, got a three-pointer from walk-on Chris Tucker to cut the lead to 76-64 with 2:44, but the Hokies were spent and got no closer the rest of the way. The Hokies were powered by senior forward Bryant Matthews, with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Gordon added 15 points and a game-high 6 assists. On the positive side of the ledger, the Hokies only had 10 turnovers for the game, and they out rebounded Virginia 44-39, including an 18-10 advantage on the offensive glass. On the downside, the Hokies only shot 36.1% (26-of-72) to Virginia's 49.2% (30-of-61), and Tech was whistled for 21 fouls to Virginia's 17. Virginia Tech is now 2-1 on the season, and UVa is 2-0.
