Hokies Likely Done in 2010 Basketball Recruiting
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com

Philadelphia point guard Ty Garland made his verbal commitment to Virginia Tech on Thursday, and it's likely that the Hokies are now finished with recruiting for the 2010 basketball class.

The Hokies were looking for a point guard to round out their 2010 class, and they got a good one in the 6-1, 165-lbs Garland, who attends John Bartram High School in Philadelphia. Garland averaged 28.9 points per game last season, and he's generally regarded as the best scorer in the city.

Garland chose the Hokies over offers from LaSalle, Seton Hall and Temple. He has the ability to get to the basket and score, and he is also known as a very good outside shooter. He combines with Jarell Eddie, the #49 prospect in the country according to Rivals.com, as Tech's two recruits for the 2010 class. Both players will be eligible to sign in November.

With two commitments for the 2010 class, the Hokies are currently one over the scholarship limit for the 2010-11 season.

That's a total of 14 players, and men's basketball teams are only allowed 13 scholarship players. That means someone from the list above will not be on the team in 2010-11. As of right now, Malcolm Delaney is projected as a late first round draft pick in 2010 by some mock draft sites. If Delaney were to declare early for the NBA, that would free up a spot. If he stays, the Hokies will have to find that scholarship somewhere else.

With five seniors projected to be on the roster for the 2010-11 season (assuming Delaney stays), the 2011 recruiting class will be very important for Virginia Tech. It will be a big class, and Seth Greenberg will be recruiting players at all three positions: point guard, wing and post.

Early indications are that Tech is set up to have a good recruiting year in 2011, because there appears to a lot of opportunity for playing time. The last time that much playing time was available for incoming freshman was the 2007 class. Malcolm Delaney, Jeff Allen, Dorenzo Hudson, J.T. Thompson, Terrell Bell and Hank Thorns all either started or saw significant playing time as freshmen.

Checking the databases at Rivals.com and Scout.com, the Hokies are involved, or have been involved, with a number of highly ranked 2011 players. Virginia Tech is mentioned with a total of ten 4-star players on Scout, and ten 4-star players on Rivals. The Hokies don't have a legitimate shot at each of those players, but as we've seen in the past, they are able to get in on higher rated prospects in years when there is a lot of playing time available.

Because of attrition, it's likely that one or two of the players in that table will not be with the team in two years. The Hokies are expected to sign a class of five players in 2011, which would give Tech 14 scholarship players with no attrition, which is one over the limit.

Tech will likely sign at least two posts in 2011, and will likely try to take at least one combo guard as well. There is a long time between now and the signing period for the 2011 class, but the Hokies would like to get their first commitments for this class in the late summer or early fall of 2009.
