Wing Guard Manny Atkins Commits to VT
by Chris Coleman, TechSideline.com

Virginia Tech's elite basketball camp that was held on Sunday is already drawing results. Seth Greenberg got his third commitment for the 2009 recruiting class on Tuesday. Stone Mountain (GA) wing Manny Atkins committed to the Hokies over offers from other strong programs.

Atkins visited Marquette on Thursday, Clemson on Saturday and then Virginia Tech on Sunday. It didn't take him long to make his decision, choosing Virginia Tech in the end. He also had scholarship offers from other programs such as Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Michigan.

At 6-7, 198, Atkins is being recruited to replace A.D. Vassallo's spot on the roster, after Vassallo's departure following the upcoming season. Like Vassallo, shooting the basketball is Atkins' strength. He averaged 20.5 points per game this past season, and shot 44% from three-point range. He also averaged 10.4 rebounds per game.

"Coach Greenberg said they feel real good about me. He said he really loved that I decided to come," said Atkins, who will sign with the Hokies in November. "They told me they have a wing guard - A.D. [Vassallo] - who is supposed to leave in the year I'm coming up. They are looking at me as a wing guard."

Atkins is friends with rising sophomore wing Terrell Bell, who is also from Stone Mountain. Atkins carries a very strong 3.6 GPA to go along with a 21 on his ACT.
