WR Jarrett Boykin Commits to VT
by Chris Horne, TSL Recruiting Analyst

Virginia Tech has landed another talented wide receiver to its 2008 recruiting class. It has also landed another talented prospect out of Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina. According to the Roanoke Times, Virginia Tech received a verbal commitment from Bulldogs star wide receiver Jarrett Boykin earlier today.

Boykin, a 6-2, 190-pound wide receiver, chose Virginia Tech over Illinois and South Carolina. He made an unofficial visit to Blacksburg last Saturday for the Virginia Tech game.

In what was a shortened junior season due to a hamstring injury, Boykin tallied 476 yards receiving, averaging close to 22 yards per catch. He has enjoyed a breakout senior year in 2007, accounting for 54 receptions for 1,082 yards in 11 regular season games. He led the team in scoring during the regular season with 116 points.

In last Friday's first round win in the 4AA playoffs, Boykin totaled three touchdowns including two receiving and one rushing.

"He is extremely strong," Butler head coach Mike Newsome said of Boykin this spring. "He has big hands. He catches everything thrown to him."

Boykin joins four other recruits that project initially at wide receiver, with each of the four hailing from the state of Virginia. Edison's Ben Barber, Landstown's Xavier Boyce, Goochland's D.J. Coles and Smithfield's (VA) Dyrell Roberts round out Tech's wide receiver class, though a few of these prospects could end up on the other side of the football.
