Hokies Grab 4-Star TE Jonathan Hannah in Recruiting Shocker

by Will Stewart, TechSideline.com

Virginia Tech pulled one of the top recruits out of the state of North Carolina Monday morning when 4-star tight end Jonathan Hannah out of South View High School in Hope Mills committed to the Hokies, passing over UNC and NC State, plus Steve Spurrier-coached South Carolina. Hannah's commitment surprised Virginia Tech recruiting observers, who had all but conceded the big-time recruit to the in-state Tar Heels or Wolfpack.

Hannah is rated the #99 player in the country across all positions by Rivals.com, giving the Hokies three recruits in the national Top 100 (Victor Harris at #28 and Deveon Simmons at #93 are the other two).

The Hokies now have one 5-star recruit (Harris) and four 4-star recruits (Simmons, Hannah, QB Ike Whitaker, and RB Elan Lewis). As impressive as that sounds, the Hokies signed five 4-star players in 2004 (Sean Glennon, George Bell, Eddie Royal, Andrew Bowman, and Kent Hicks) and seven 4-star players in 2003 (Tripp Carroll, Matt Welsh, Chris Ellis, Xavier Adibi, Vince Hall, James Griffin, and Michael Hinton).

The Virginia Tech football staff aren't the only ones grinning this morning -- so is VT basketball coach Seth Greenberg. Hannah is a two-sport star who wants to play both football and basketball in college, and his 6-4, 250-pound frame will no doubt be a welcome sight on the floor of Cassell Coliseum.

Hannah's commitment now gives the Hokies 20 players in the class of 2005 (including 17 high school seniors and prep players William Wall, Brandon Holland, and Sam Wheeler -- click here for the complete list). Hannah is the first true tight end in this recruiting class, joining OL/TE Ed Wang as future candidates to block and catch passes for the Hokies.

We'll have more from Hannah himself later today or tonight. To learn more about this key commitment, see his recruiting profile on TechSideline.com and access our twelve past updates on Hannah, tracking his recruitment by VT since March of last year.
