Marquie Cooke Verbals to VT
by Will Stewart, TechSideline.com

In an announcement that Hokie basketball fans are hoping will start to pull their men's basketball program out of the doldrums, highly-touted Nansemond River (Suffolk VA) point guard Marquie Cooke verbaled to Virginia Tech.

Cooke, a 6-3, 200-pound point guard, gave his commitment to the Hokies today and will sign with them in the early signing period in November. He will enroll at Tech in the fall of 2004, the Hokies' first season in the ACC.

Cooke is rated the #45 player overall by Rivals.com, #84 by TheInsiders.com, and #56 by Brick Oettinger of the Prep Stars Recruiter's Handbook.

Rivals rates him as the #8 point guard in the country, and The Insiders rank him as the #12 PG.

Cooke's commitment to Virginia Tech is being equated to the commitment of Dell Curry, a McDonald's High School All-American in the 1980's. Cooke is the most highly-regarded recruit since Curry to choose Virginia Tech.

Cooke told TSL recruiting analyst Chris Horne last Friday, "I’m committing to Virginia Tech. I love the campus and the coaches. The kids are very friendly down there, and it’s a great atmosphere.

“Me and Coach Greenberg have a great relationship,” said Cooke of VT men's basketball coach Seth Greenberg. “He’s committed to making me a better basketball player on and off the court, so I committed to him. I’m looking forward to leading Virginia Tech to some championships.”

He then followed through on those statements at a 3 pm press conference today. In recent days, Cooke's choice came down to the Hokies and Clemson, and Cooke brought one hat from each school to the press conference. He lifted the Clemson hat for drama, almost put it on his head, and then cast it aside for the VT hat.

TSL will have quotes from Cooke's press conference later tonight in a TechSideline Pass update.
