"Crazy for the Hokies" Contest Announced

BLACKSBURG, August 15, 2001 — The Virginia Tech Licensing Department is asking Hokies around the world to loose their minds and go "Crazy for the Hokies" beginning September 1. The objective of this annual contest is to reproduce one of the four Virginia Tech logos in the biggest, most creative, most outlandish manner possible, and in turn boost Hokie pride everywhere.

"The contest is open to any person, group of people, school, or organization to create the largest reproduction of any one of the four university logos (Hokie bird, shield, VT or word Hokies)" said Locke White, director of Licensing and Trademark Administration for Virginia Tech. "We’re asking Hokie fans to go all out and have fun with this. I expect a contestant to enter a giant Hokie bird in the sand beside the Sphinx in Egypt but a VT on a barn beside I-81 in Harrisonburg will still be cool and could win," said White.

While the contest itself is jam-packed with fun, so are the prizes. First prize is $1,000 cash from Tech Bookstore (118 S. Main), $1,000 worth of Hokie apparel from Peebles, and $1,000 of tailgating food from Kroger. Second prize is $500 cash (Tech Bookstore), $500 Hokie apparel (Peebles), and $500 food (Kroger). Third prize is $250 cash (Tech Bookstore), $250 Hokie apparel (Peebles), and $250 food (Kroger). The judging will be based on four criteria: 1) the size of the logo, 2) the uniqueness of the creation, 3) the amount of exposure, and 4) the quality of the reproduction. Winners will be announced during halftime of the VT vs. Miami football game Dec. 1 at Lane Stadium, at which time the winning entries will be shown on the Jumbotron.

Whether it’s a design in a field on the side of the interstate, lights on a skyscraper at night, or school children positioned on a field, the possibilities are limitless for all Hokie fans to prove that they are "Crazy for the Hokies." All entry forms and related material must be received by the Virginia Tech Licensing Department no later than November 1.

Participants in the contest must not reproduce any of the logos on private or public property without prior written consent by the owner. More guidelines to the contest and the official entry form may be found on the Internet at:

or by contacting the Virginia Tech Licensing Department (for information on contacting the VT Licensing Department, visit their contact page on the VT Licensing web site).
