Hokies Cruise Past Rutgers
"Hokie Central" Reacts by Updating Format

It was, as they say, a beautiful day for college football. The weather this past Saturday was as good as promised, and the Hokies took the field in front of 47,000 fans and beat Rutgers 30-14. Tech blew out of the gate for the second week in a row, then sputtered at times, but rode the leg of Shayne Graham and the awesome talent of Brian Edmonds to a 30-14 victory over a Rutgers team that played with heart, and played well, but were just outmatched. I will post my game analysis on Tuesday morning, so look for it tomorrow morning when you log on.

Unless you were under a rock this weekend, you know by now that Arizona State shocked the country by pounding Nebraska 19-0. I'm still flabbergasted (my favorite word). I would have guessed that a team like Florida State might knock off the Huskers, but never in my wildest dreams did I believe that Arizona State would beat them, and certainly not in such convincing fashion.

All of this is relevant here at Hokie Central because it means that the Virginia Tech Hokies now have the nation's longest winning streak, at 13 games. The previous number three team in terms of winning streak, Tennessee, also did the favor of losing this past weekend, so the VT Hokies are all alone with their 13-win streak. Look for that stat to pop up all over the country this week.

Now that the Hokies are drawing a little attention, I figured that Hokie Central was going to have to step it up a notch, too. So, in response to reader input and some advice I've been reading about web page style, here's a new table-driven format that ought to knock your little orange-and-maroon socks off! I'm really proud of the new format...can you tell?

What I've done: so far, I've developed and tested the new format on Netscape Navigator 2.0 and Mosaic 2.1.1, and it looks pretty good on both of those. I haven't had a chance yet to check it out in Microsoft Internet Explorer, but I don't anticipate any problems there.

What it should look like: you should see a Chicago maroon border on the left side of the page. The only items that should appear in the border are my burnt orange navigation buttons, near the top of the page, and day-and-date notations for each new update. The day-and-date notations should appear in burnt orange text in Navigator and Explorer. Unfortunately, Mosaic doesn't support font coloring, so they are black in Mosaic, which is a little hard to see on the maroon background. But hey, Mosaic users, you ought to see it in Navigator and Explorer - it looks killer.

All other content should appear in the white area on the right-hand side of the page, and it should be black text on a white background. I've read that you should use that color scheme for readable content, and since I want only the best for my readers, here it is!

Let me know what you think, folks, and in particular, let me know if it doesn't look good on your browser (although I can't promise you anything - making it look good for Netscape, Explorer, and Mosaic should cover about 99% of my audience, so I'm not going to kill myself to make it look better on other browsers). If you miss the old format, then just check out the old archives. They will remain as white-on-maroon, because I'm just too lazy to convert them over. Future archives will use the new format.

Again, look for my Rutgers game analysis tomorrow. See you then!
